Online scams in Ghana are on the rise, targeting students, small business owners, and even professionals. As a cybersecurity student, I have observed the tactics used by cybercriminals, and here are some ways to stay safe.

1. Mobile Money Fraud

Scammers may call pretending to be from MTN or Vodafone. They say you’ve won a prize and ask you to dial certain codes. Never send money to “unlock” a prize.

2. Fake Job Offers

Some fake recruiters promise jobs, especially abroad, but request “processing fees.” Always research companies before sending money or personal documents.

3. Online Store Scams (WhatsApp/Instagram)

You send money, but never get your goods. Only buy from verified sellers or cash-on-delivery stores.

4. Phishing Messages

Emails or SMS that say, “Your bank account has been blocked.” Never click links. Contact your bank directly.

5. Romance Scams

Someone you met online suddenly asks for money. Be careful — love doesn’t ask for airtime or phone replacements.

Stay Safe Tips:

  • Use strong passwords

  • Enable 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication)

  • Don’t share sensitive info on public Wi-Fi

  • Verify before you pay

Stay safe online. Share this post to protect a friend.
