It is wrong to choose IPL before the country- this former Australian legend got angry with Hazelwood’s decision

Josh Hazlewood was part of Australia’s playing XI in the WTC 2025 final
Former Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has criticised compatriot Josh Hazlewood for prioritising the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final against South Africa. Johnson said Hazlewood’s decision raises questions about his commitment to the national team.
Hazlewood’s IPL performance
Hazlewood was among the players who decided to return to India and play again after the IPL 2025 was postponed due to India-Pakistan tensions. He played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who reached the final and defeated Punjab Kings to win the IPL title for the first time. Hazlewood took 22 wickets this season, including the crucial wicket of Punjab opener Priyansh Arya in the final.
Hazlewood’s performance in the WTC final
Hazlewood was part of Australia’s fast bowling attack in the WTC final played at Lord’s, but he could take only two wickets. Captain Pat Cummins gave him a chance before Scott Boland, but he failed to make an impact. South Africa won the WTC title by five wickets.
Johnson’s comment
In his column in ‘The West Australian’, Johnson wrote, “Hazlewood’s fitness has been a matter of concern in recent years. It is surprising to prioritize a return to the postponed IPL instead of preparing for the national team.” Johnson, who himself has played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in six seasons of the IPL, questioned Hazlewood’s decision.
Question on bowling order
Johnson also commented on the future of Australia’s ‘Big Four’ bowling attack—Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon. He said, “These experienced bowlers are getting constant opportunities, but if they are playing only for a big tournament like the Ashes, then this is not the right mindset. We have to trust the future Test players and give opportunities to new faces.”
