We're witnessing a similar inflection point with multi-agent AI systems, and most organizations are still treating this as experimental technology rather than the foundational shift it represents.
Couple of years ago, I watched a financial services team spend six weeks building custom integrations to connect their risk assessment pipeline with their compliance checking system and their reporting dashboard.
Earlier this year, that same team deployed a multi-agent system using CrewAI that orchestrates these processes autonomously, reducing their processing time from hours to minutes while improving accuracy by 34%.
This isn't just workflow automation with a fancy AI wrapper - it's the emergence of what I call "cognitive orchestration," where specialized AI agents collaborate like departments in a well-run organization.

For example, in a content creation workflow, a research agent might typically gather information before passing it to a writing agent. But in a well-designed multi-agent system, the writing agent can request specific additional research mid-process, and the research agent can proactively identify gaps in the draft that require further investigation. This back-and-forth collaboration produces outcomes that are qualitatively different from linear pipeline processing.

The organizations that will thrive in this transition are those that understand multi-agent AI not as a technology deployment but as an organizational capability that requires new approaches to problem definition, team design, and performance measurement.
