Diving in Candidasa: Bali’s Shark Point & More

Located on Bali’s eastern coast, Candidasa is a lesser-known yet world-class diving destination that offers thrilling underwater experiences for more advanced divers. Often overshadowed by Tulamben or Nusa Penida, Candidasa is a hidden treasure that features powerful currents, pelagic life, and some of the best chances to spot reef sharks in Bali—especially at the famous Shark Point.

Shark Point is the highlight of Candidasa diving. This dive site lives up to its name, offering a rare opportunity to encounter blacktip and whitetip reef sharks in their natural environment. These elegant predators are often seen gracefully patrolling the reef ledges or cruising by in the blue, especially during morning dives when visibility tends to be optimal. The presence of sharks here reflects the health of the reef and the abundance of marine life that supports top predators.

But Candidasa is more than just Shark Point. Sites like Gili Biaha, Gili Mimpang, and Gili Tepekong form what divers affectionately call the "Gilis of Candidasa." These small, rocky islets are surrounded by dramatic underwater landscapes, including steep walls, caves, and swim-throughs. Gili Tepekong, in particular, is famous for the "Canyon," a breathtaking formation that combines strong currents with thrilling topography. It’s a dive site that can quickly turn into an adrenaline-pumping drift dive when the conditions shift, requiring excellent buoyancy and experience navigating in changing currents.

The marine biodiversity in this region is impressive. Apart from sharks, you may encounter barracudas, tuna, napoleon wrasse, turtles, and even the elusive mola mola during the right season (usually between July and October). Schools of reef fish, large groupers, and vibrant corals provide color and contrast against the dramatic underwater terrain. The currents that sweep through these dive sites bring nutrient-rich waters, supporting a vibrant ecosystem—but also demanding respect and preparedness from divers.

Due to the conditions, diving in Candidasa is best suited for advanced divers or those with experience in drift diving. It’s essential to dive with a knowledgeable local team, like Bali Aqua, who can read the tides and conditions and guide you safely through this dynamic underwater playground. The reward is unforgettable: diving here feels like you’ve stepped into a raw, untouched part of Bali’s oceanic wilderness.

After your dive, Candidasa also offers a quiet, laid-back atmosphere—perfect for relaxing seaside, enjoying local food, and reflecting on the day’s adventures. It’s a destination that combines excitement below the surface with tranquility above, making it ideal for divers seeking both thrill and peace.
