In a deeply disturbing and heartbreaking incident, a family in Chinna Kulipatti village of Oddanchatram, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu, was shattered after a woman’s elopement led to the deaths of her two minor daughters, her mother, and grandmother.

The tragic chain of events unfolded when Pavithra, 25, allegedly eloped with another man, leaving behind her daughters. Unable to bear the emotional trauma and perceived social shame, her mother Kaleeswari (45) and grandmother Chellammal (65) took the extreme step of killing the two children and then committing suicide.

A Family in Distress: The Backstory

Pavithra had been married to Prabhakaran, a trader from Aravakuruchi, Karur, for the past ten years. However, their marriage was reportedly troubled, with frequent quarrels leading to a separation. In April, Pavithra moved out of her husband’s home, returning to her mother’s house in Oddanchatram along with her daughters, Lathikasri (7) and Deepthi (5).

Hoping to restore family honor, Kaleeswari and Chellammal tried to reconcile the couple, but all efforts failed.

A Relationship That Led to Rupture

In the months following her separation, Pavithra reportedly entered into a relationship with another man, which created further tension within the household. Repeated arguments ensued, and the situation escalated despite intervention from local villagers who attempted to mediate.

According to police sources, Pavithra eventually abandoned her daughters and eloped on Tuesday, leaving her mother and grandmother devastated. The emotional toll of the incident and the social stigma they feared likely pushed the elderly women over the edge

A Shocking Discovery

On Wednesday, neighbors noticed that the house remained unusually quiet and locked for a long time. Concerned, they alerted the Idayakottai police, who arrived at the scene and broke open the door. Inside, they found the lifeless bodies of the two girls and the two women.

Initial investigations revealed that the children had been strangled, and the two women had died by suicide shortly after.

Official Response and Ongoing Investigation

The bodies were sent to Dindigul Medical College Hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered, and the police are conducting a detailed investigation to understand the full sequence of events and motivations behind the crime.

Community Shocked by the Incident

The incident has shaken the quiet village of Chinna Kulipatti, with locals expressing disbelief and sorrow. Many see it as a tragic consequence of social pressure and emotional isolation.

"This is not just a family tragedy but a wake-up call to the dangers of unchecked emotional distress and societal pressure," said a local villager who had known the family.

A Larger Issue: Mental Health and Social Stigma

This tragic incident sheds light on larger societal issues such as:

  • Mental health challenges faced by caregivers and elders

  • The burden of family honor in rural communities

  • Lack of support systems for women undergoing domestic strife

  • Stigma around separation, remarriage, and relationships

Experts stress the urgent need for counseling services, mental health awareness, and community-based support systems to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Conclusion: A Family Broken, Lives Lost

What began as a failed marriage and strained relationships ended in an unimaginable tragedy—with four lives lost, and a family torn apart. While the police probe continues, the emotional scars left behind in the community will take far longer to heal.
