Write the Docs Kenya 2025: Building a Community, One Doc at a Time

On June 7, 2025, the Write The Docs Kenya community proudly hosted its 2nd official conference at @ZetechUniversity in Nairobi. Nowadays, it's normal, yeah, being part of the planning team, executing my deliveries remotely with a team of incredible-minded individuals. Ian kiprotich Kevin Tuei Samuel Macharia Tabitha Margaret, and our team lead Hillary Nyakundi, to bring the full-day event to life. With over 100 attendees, a lineup of inspiring speakers, and a shared passion for documentation, the conference was a resounding success.

This recap takes you behind the scenes—from the early planning stages to the execution of the event—and celebrates the collective achievement of everyone involved. More importantly, it serves as a reminder that this is just the beginning, with more events and opportunities on the horizon.

Planning Phase: Building the Foundation

The road to Write the Docs Kenya 2025 began months in advance, with our team working entirely remotely. Despite the challenges of coordinating across different locations in Kenya, we were united by a common goal: to create an event that would inspire, educate, and connect documentation professionals in Kenya and beyond.

  • Promotion and Outreach: We leveraged social media platforms like X, LinkedIn, and our community platform to spread the word.

  • Speaker Lineup: We opened the CFP on to which several topics were sent, the team selected the best relevant topics to suit our audience.

  • Venue Selection: I know getting the right venue for an event in #Nairobi is hectic sometimes, I was tasked with this. And we all ended up settling on Zetech University for its location from #Nairobi CBD, modern facilities, and accessibility. The university’s commitment to fostering learning and innovation made it an ideal setting for our conference. Thank you, David Nanjila

  • Logistics and Coordination: Organizing a full-day conference required meticulous attention to detail. We coordinated with Zetech University to arrange the venue setup, catering, and technical requirements such as audiovisual equipment. Despite the complexities of remote collaboration, our team worked seamlessly to handle every aspect, from scheduling sessions to ensuring a smooth registration process.

Execution: A Day of Learning, Connection, and Inspiration

The big day—June 7, 2025—arrived with a buzz of anticipation, travelled some 6+ hours by car, and was my first time at Zetech University. Attendees gathered ready for a day dedicated to the art and science of documentation.

  • Morning Sessions: Setting the Tone: After some unexpected technical delays, the conference kicked off at 10:00 AM with a warm welcome from the planning team and an overview of the day’s schedule. https://wtdkenya25.netlify.app/ (I reminded myself of HTML and JS skills, just a few days before the event)

  • Lunch and Networking: Lunch provided a valuable networking opportunity. The sense of community was strong, with conversations flowing freely about the challenges and opportunities in the documentation field. (The food was lit.

  • Afternoon Sessions: Diving Deeper: The afternoon sessions explored more advanced topics

  • Wrap-Up and Closing Remarks: As the day drew to a close, we gathered for a wrap-up session. We thanked the speakers, attendees, and everyone who contributed to the event’s success.

Outcomes: Celebrating Success and Looking Ahead

The Write the Docs Kenya 2025 conference exceeded all expectations, both in terms of attendance and impact.

  • Attendance and Feedback: The event drew a diverse crowd of documentation professionals, developers, and industry newcomers. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the quality of the speakers, the relevance of the topics, and the seamless organization. Attendees particularly appreciated the balance between technical content and opportunities for networking.

  • Community Growth and Future Plans: This conference was a significant milestone, but it’s only the start. The Write the Docs Kenya community is committed to fostering ongoing learning and collaboration. We are already planning future events, including smaller meetups and workshops, to continue supporting documentation professionals across the region.
