In his Test career, Wasim Akram took 146 wickets in 55 innings of 32 matches played in SENA countries at an average of 24.11.

The five-Test series between India and England begins today, 20 June 2025, with the first Test at Headingley in Leeds. The young Indian team, led by Shubman Gill, is set to begin a new chapter after the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. The series is part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, and for Gill, this will be his first big opportunity to prove his leadership abilities.

Jasprit Bumrah’s eyes on history

Akram

Team India’s most experienced fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is close to creating history in this Test. Bumrah is second in the list of Asian bowlers with the most Test wickets in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). Former Pakistani legend Wasim Akram tops this list with 146 wickets, while Bumrah is right behind him with 145 wickets.

Akram took 146 wickets in 55 innings of 32 Tests in SENA countries at an average of 24.11, while Bumrah has taken 145 wickets in 31 Tests at an impressive average of 21.02. If Bumrah manages to take two wickets in the Leeds Test, he will surpass Akram to become the Asian bowler with the most Test wickets in SENA countries.

Match time and toss

The first Test match between India and England will start at 3:30 pm Indian time. The toss will take place at 3:00 am, with captain Shubman Gill and Ben Stokes taking the field. England have announced their playing XI, but India are confused about the selection of their final XI in view of the changing conditions of the pitch. Gill will reveal his team’s playing XI during the toss.

England’s weak bowling, India’s chance

England’s fast bowling looks weak in this series, as bowlers like Mark Wood, Ollie Stone and Gus Atkinson are injured. Experienced bowlers like Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse will be in charge, but India’s bowling led by Bumrah is a big threat to England’s batting. Will Gill’s captaincy and Bumrah’s bowling give India victory in this Test?
