In a major administrative move, the Tamil Nadu government has implemented a significant reshuffle in the police force. Eighteen officers, including senior IPS and SP-rank officials, have been transferred or promoted. The most notable development is the reinstatement of DIG D. Magesh Kumar, who had been suspended earlier this year.

This reshuffle is part of the state’s broader effort to streamline law enforcement and strengthen leadership in key zones such as cybercrime, coastal security, and technical services.

DIG D. Magesh Kumar Reinstated in Coastal Security Group

D. Magesh Kumar, who was suspended in February 2025 following allegations of sexual harassment by a woman traffic constable, has now been reinstated. He has been posted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Coastal Security Group, Chennai.

The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), after an investigation, reportedly cleared him of all charges, prompting the government to revoke his suspension in April.

He replaces R. Jayanthi, who has now been appointed as DIG, Technical Services, Chennai.

Major IPS-Level Transfers

  • M.R. Sibi Chakravarthi, formerly DIG/Joint Commissioner, South Zone, has been posted as DIG and Chief Vigilance Officer at Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL), Chennai.

  • Pakerla Cephas Kalyan, who earlier held charge of the West Zone, has taken over as DIG/Joint Commissioner, South Zone, Greater Chennai Police.

  • Disha Mittal, previously DIG, Villupuram Range, is now posted as DIG/Joint Commissioner, West Zone, Greater Chennai.

  • E.S. Uma has been transferred from Salem Range to Villupuram Range.

SP-Level and AIG Appointments

  • G. Nagajothi has been posted as SP-I, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB), Chennai.

  • S.P. Lavanya has taken over as SP, State Crime Records Bureau, replacing Nagajothi.

  • Amanat Mann, earlier placed in the Vacancy Reserve, has been appointed Assistant Inspector General (AIG), Social Justice and Human Rights, Chennai.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Changes

  • B. Geetha has been moved from Salem City to the Greater Chennai Police Headquarters.

  • V. Geetha is now posted at Salem City Headquarters, transferred from Tirunelveli.

  • A. Velmurugan has been posted as DCP, Central Crime Branch, Tambaram Commissionerate.

  • K. Prabakar, who held the CCB post earlier, is now posted as SP-III, Cyber Crime Wing, Chennai.

Promotions to SP and DCP Ranks

Three officers have been promoted:

  • Kelkar Subhramanya Balachandra has been posted as DCP (South), Salem City.

  • Kambham Samuel Praveen Gowtham and V. Prasannakumar have been promoted to SP rank and posted as DCPs in Tiruppur and Tirunelveli, respectively.

Significance of the 2025 TN Police Reshuffle

This police reshuffle reflects the Tamil Nadu government’s ongoing effort to build a more efficient, transparent, and responsive police system. Deploying experienced officers to strategic regions like Greater Chennai, Villupuram, and Tambaram is expected to enhance law enforcement, public safety, and administrative oversight.

The reinstatement of DIG Magesh Kumar, after an internal investigation cleared him, adds a sensitive element to the reshuffle and is likely to draw public attention.
