Team India Sets Unwanted Record for Most Test Centuries in a Defeat. In Leeds, Team India became the first side in Test cricket history to score five individual centuries and still lose the match. Despite their strong batting performance, England successfully chased down a daunting target of 371 to win the first Test of the five-match series by five wickets.

India’s five centuries came from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 off 159), Shubman Gill (147 off 227), and Rishabh Pant (134 off 178) in the first innings. In the second innings, KL Rahul added 137 (off 247), while Pant scored another hundred—118 off 140 balls.

Before this, no team had ever lost a Test after scoring five centuries. The only comparable instance was in 1928, when Australia lost to England at the MCG despite four centurions.

Needing 350 runs on the final day, England pulled off a stunning chase to hand India a historic defeat.

Record-Breaking Numbers in the Headingley Test

For the First Time in 148 Years: Team India Creates Unwanted History with Defeat to England

Only Australia has chased a higher total on the final scheduled day of a Test match—404 runs against England on Day 5 of the 1948 Headingley Test. In comparison, India’s combined total of 835 runs in the recent Headingley Test is now the fourth-highest ever by a team that ended up losing the match.

The match also saw a historic milestone, as England and India collectively scored 1,673 runs—the highest aggregate ever in a Test between these two nations. The previous record was 1,614 runs during the 1990 Manchester Test, which ended in a draw.

In the match, England delivered an almost perfect run chase on the final day. Led by a brilliant 149 from Ben Duckett and supported by valuable knocks from Zak Crawley, Joe Root, and Jamie Smith, the hosts chased down the target in just 82 overs, finishing at 373/5 to secure a five-wicket victory and go 1-0 up in the five-Test series.
