method utilizes this ID to determine which interval should be stopped. You can optionally use the console log to view the generated variable ID for debugging purposes.

method repeatedly calls a function or executes a code snippet with a fixed time delay between each call. It returns a unique interval ID, which is used to identify the interval. In addition to the function and delay, setInterval
can accept additional arguments that are passed to the function being executed, allowing for enhanced functionality within the function.
clearInterval
The clearInterval
method is used to stop the execution of a function that was set up using setInterval
. It requires the unique interval ID returned by setInterval
, as discussed, to identify which interval to clear. By calling clearInterval
with this ID, you can manually stop the repeated execution of the function. This is useful for managing resources, essential for preventing memory leaks or unnecessary CPU usage, and ensuring that functions do not continue to run indefinitely. In the example, the stopInterval
function demonstrates how to use clearInterval
to halt the interval.

A Practical Application of setInterval in JavaScript Game Development
In my JavaScript Pac-Man project, inspired by Ania Kub贸w鈥檚 game tutorial, I added a title and bonus screen to automatically toggle at the initial load and the end of each game, intended to provide an arcade-style attract screen. Initially, I declared the setInterval
method as a variable, which led to problematic issues. The attract screen continued running when the game started, leading to gameplay beginning on the attract screen. This setInterval
as a variable approach did not provide the precise control needed to start, stop, and restart the toggling of both screens.
By declaring the setInterval
method within a function, I gained the flexible control I needed to start, stop, and then restart my animation, which toggles the character and points screen.
To achieve this effect, I created the functions setTitleScreen()
and setScoreScreen()
, which manages the display of the title and score screens in the game.
Start and Stop Functions
In this section, we explore how to use start and stop functions to switch between the Title and Score screens in a JavaScript app. By utilizing global variables and managing intervals, we can control the screen transitions accurately. This approach helps in smooth switching and conserves resources by starting and stopping intervals as needed. With clear code explanations and examples, we demonstrate how to use these functions to make the app more dynamic.
First, I created a global variable so it can be accessible to both the start and end functions. I set the variable to null to prevent unintended behavior or errors.

. If it is, the function sets up an interval that runs every 5 seconds. Within this interval, a flag, flagToggleTitleAndScoreScreen
, is used to alternate between displaying the Score screen and the Title screen. The flag is toggled with each interval execution to ensure the screens switch back and forth. Additionally, the interval ID is logged for debugging purposes. The function is then called to initiate the toggling process.
