From Resistance to Reliance: India’s Solar Shift and Solex’s Role in It

Not long ago, we came across an article on DownToEarth.org.in titled "From ₹200 to ₹9: Plummeting Solar Costs Could Spark India’s Clean Energy Revolution." For us at Solex Energy Limited, this wasn’t just an economic headline. It was deeply personal — a reflection of the very path we’ve walked for over 30 years.
Because we haven’t just witnessed this transformation; we’ve been a part of it.
Rewinding the Clock: When Solar Was a Luxury
Thirty years ago, solar energy in India was largely misunderstood, unaffordable, and mostly ignored. We remember those early days clearly. Back then, solar wasn’t an alternative energy; it was an afterthought. The cost of solar panels was as high as ₹200 per watt. Infrastructure was weak. Awareness was nearly absent. And perhaps most critically, there was little to no belief in its potential.
In those times, when Solex Energy took its first steps, solar energy was seen as a luxury that few could afford and even fewer trusted.
Where We Are Today: From Skepticism to Mainstream
Fast forward to 2025, and the conversation is dramatically different.
Solar energy is no longer a distant dream — it’s a daily reality. The cost of a solar module has dropped to less than ₹9 per watt, making it one of the most cost-effective sources of power in the country. And for the first time, solar is not just competing with conventional electricity in many cases; it's outperforming it.
Today, India generates more solar energy than most of the world imagined possible two decades ago.
But this didn’t happen overnight.
It Took an Ecosystem to Bring the Sun Within Reach
What we see today is not the outcome of a single innovation; it’s the result of decades of effort, collaboration, and vision.
The government of India laid the foundation by introducing progressive policies, subsidies, and schemes that made solar adoption not only viable but attractive.
Manufacturers, including companies like ours, invested in scale, R&D, and backward integration to bring down costs and increase efficiency.
EPC and D&C partners made it operational, translating panels and inverters into functioning power systems across cities, towns, and rural belts.
And most importantly, the people of India - industrialists, homeowners, and institutions, chose to embrace solar not as a backup, but as a primary source of energy.
This collective shift in mindset and capability is what made the ₹9 revolution possible.
Our Role: Proudly Building Bharat’s Solar Foundation
We’ve stayed committed to one goal: making solar energy accessible, affordable, and aspirational for every Indian.
From our humble beginnings to becoming one of India’s trusted solar module manufacturers, we’ve evolved with the industry and, often ahead of it. Our journey has been shaped by persistence, quality-first thinking, and a deep belief in the power of the sun to change lives.
Over the years, we’ve:
Supplied high-efficiency solar PV modules across sectors
Partnered with EPC players to deliver turnkey installations
Enabled hundreds of industries and institutions to reduce their energy footprint
Played a small but significant role in making solar a movement, not just a market
The Road Ahead: Bright, Affordable, and Inevitable
As solar continues to rise in scale and fall in cost, we’re entering an era where energy isn’t just green; it’s smart.
But this isn’t the finish line. This is a fresh starting point for India’s energy independence. Solar still has miles to go in terms of reach, integration, and innovation. And as we move ahead, Solex Energy will continue to build solutions that are not only affordable but also dependable, efficient, and built for the Indian context.
When you look at the fall in solar costs from ₹200 to ₹9 per watt, it’s easy to quote numbers. But behind those numbers lies a revolution powered by policy, people, and purpose.
We’re proud to have walked this path from resistance to acceptance, from luxury to necessity, and from uncertainty to leadership.
And we know this is just the beginning.
