How to Travel Around Bali as a Diver

Bali may be a small island, but getting from one dive site to another can feel like an adventure of its own. Whether you’re planning a multi-day dive safari, staying in one area, or hopping between sites like Tulamben, Nusa Penida, and Padang Bai, knowing how to travel around Bali as a diver will help you stay organized, safe, and ready for every underwater experience.
If you're diving with an established dive center like Bali Aqua, much of your logistics can be arranged for you. Bali Aqua offers dive safaris and multi-day packages that include transport between dive sites, accommodations, and even gear handling perfect for those who want a seamless experience without worrying about navigation.
For those organizing their own trip, private drivers are one of the most convenient options. Affordable and flexible, private drivers can take you across the island safely, even with wet gear and bulky equipment. For example, the journey from Sanur to Tulamben takes about 2.5–3 hours by car, and having a dedicated driver means you can stop for food, viewpoints, or a temple visit along the way.
If you’re traveling light, renting a scooter is a popular choice for short distances especially in Amed, Padang Bai, or Tulamben, where dive sites and accommodations are close together. However, scooters are not ideal if you're carrying full dive gear or traveling in rainy conditions. Safety comes first, so only consider this option if you're an experienced scooter rider.
To reach Nusa Penida, fast boats depart daily from Sanur, Padang Bai, and even from the Gili Islands. Once on the island, you can rent a scooter or arrange transport through your dive operator. Keep in mind that Penida's roads can be rough, so always choose comfort over speed if you’re hauling gear. Bali Aqua's day trips to Nusa Penida are an excellent option if you want a hassle-free experience with manta encounters included.
Public transport options like shared vans exist but are not very practical for divers, as they often have limited space and irregular schedules. If you're traveling with your own equipment or tight on time between dives, it's best to avoid them and opt for private or organized dive trips like those offered by Bali Aqua.
Most importantly, always remember to avoid flying within 18–24 hours after your last dive. When planning transport, especially to or from the airport, make sure you’re not rushing after a deep dive. If needed, spend your last night in Sanur, close to Bali Aqua’s dive center, to relax and prepare for your departure without pressure.
In short, whether you’re taking a guided safari or exploring Bali’s dive regions independently, the key to stress-free travel is planning ahead, prioritizing comfort, and letting your schedule flow with the island’s relaxed rhythm. The less you worry about logistics, the more energy you’ll have for what matters most—diving into Bali’s incredible underwater world with Bali Aqua.
