Where Do AI Agents Fit in Your Security Stack?


Everyone in tech, especially in cybersecurity, is buzzing about AI agents and how they can automate and improve security operations. I've been exploring where these AI agents actually add value, beyond the hype. The key question is how to integrate AI into our security stack effectively. Do we let AI systems plug in directly to our data sources, or do we layer them on top of existing security tools? In this post, I'll share insights from comparing traditional rule-based approaches with AI-driven "agentic" systems. We'll use risk scoring as an example and consider at which layer of the security architecture an AI agent makes the most sense. The goal is a technically-informed look at what works in practice for security teams.
From Rule-Based Risk Scoring to Adaptive AI Intelligence
Risk scoring is a good example to illustrate the difference between a conventional approach and an AI agent-based approach. Traditionally, security teams use rule-based formulas or policies to score risks. For instance, a security graph might aggregate data about assets, vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and threats, then apply predefined rules to calculate a risk score. This ruleset approach is predictable and transparent; we might assign higher points for an internet-facing asset with a critical vulnerability, or lower points if a system is isolated. However, it's also rigid and static. Developers or analysts have to anticipate every scenario and encode rules for it. If a new type of threat emerges, someone must update the rules, which is time-consuming.
As one article put it, "traditional security software operates using fixed rule sets – developers must anticipate every possible scenario and write new rules for new threats"¹. This rigidity can lead to inefficiencies: a static, rule-based risk scoring system often fires too many alerts on benign scenarios because it lacks context or adaptability. In the compliance world, for example, static, rule-based risk scoring can generate large numbers of false positives, flooding analysts with alerts triggered by inflexible rules. Many of us have experienced this, the "alert fatigue" from rules that technically flag issues which turn out not to be important.
Now enter the AI agentic approach. An AI agent is a program that understands its environment, processes data, and takes actions to achieve goals. In security, an AI agent for risk scoring wouldn't rely solely on static thresholds. Instead, it would use its LLM-based reasoning capabilities to continuously adapt to patterns and context. Think of it as having an autonomous analyst that can learn from feedback. For example, an AI-driven system could adjust what "normal" risk looks like for a given asset by considering many contextual factors: the asset's typical behavior, its business criticality, recent threat intelligence, etc. Over time, the agent refines its judgment.
In practice, this means the AI might raise a risk score when multiple weak signals combine (something a fixed rule might miss), or lower the score when context suggests an alert is likely a false positive. For instance, agentic AI can apply dynamic thresholds for alerts, taking into account factors like a user's location, normal transaction patterns, recent activity and filter out anomalies that aren't truly malicious. The result is fewer irrelevant alerts and a focus on real risks. In the anti-fraud domain, such an AI system learns to reduce false positives and only escalate genuine threats, whereas an old rules engine would have flagged everything beyond a hard-coded threshold.
Key Insight: The contrast is clear: rules are consistent but inflexible, while AI agents are adaptive but need training. Organizations using AI-powered risk scoring report up to 70% reduction in false positives².
Integration Layers for AI Agents: Source vs Tool vs Platform
When evaluating where to deploy an AI agent in your security architecture, it helps to think in layers. Consider a simple stack of security data flow:
Level 0 – Data Sources: This is the raw input level. It includes your cloud infrastructure, on-prem servers, endpoints, network devices – all the sources that generate security-relevant data (logs, events, configurations, etc.).
Level 1 – Security Tools: At this layer, we have tools that consume the raw data and produce insights. Examples are a SIEM aggregating logs, a cloud security posture management (CSPM) tool scanning your cloud for misconfigurations, an EDR system monitoring endpoint behavior, or a vulnerability scanner. These tools typically apply correlations or rules to detect issues.
Level 2 – Platforms/Graphs: This could be an aggregated security platform or security graph that unifies data from multiple tools. For instance, a platform might take input from your SIEM, vulnerability scanner, threat intelligence feeds, etc., and combine them to provide a holistic view (e.g., linking vulnerabilities to the assets and their exposure in a graph database). A rules-based risk scoring engine often lives here – it uses the combined context to assign risk levels or prioritize alerts.
Level 3 – Orchestration/Response: At the top might be an orchestration layer (SOAR or custom automation) where responses are triggered. This is where playbooks execute (like isolating a machine, sending an alert, or opening a ticket) once something is deemed high risk. Finally, the outputs flow to the security team (analysts or responders) who review alerts, make decisions, and fine-tune the system.
Level 4 – Strategic Management: Beyond tactical response, this level involves long-term security planning, policy optimization, and strategic decision-making based on security trends and organizational risk appetite.

Level 0 Integration: Directly at the Data Source
In this approach, the AI agent connects straight to the sources of data. For example, it might call cloud APIs to enumerate configurations and user activities, or ingest raw log streams from endpoints, without going through a SIEM or other intermediary. The advantage is first-hand access to all the granular data. The agent isn't limited by what a pre-existing tool chooses to log or alert on, it can decide what to query or monitor. This can uncover issues that rigid tools might miss.
However, the challenges are significant: the agent must handle large volumes of raw data and make sense of different data formats. Essentially, it needs to replicate some duties of a Level 1 tool (like parsing logs or scanning configurations) before it can even analyze threats. This demands a very robust AI design to make the flow more deterministic. There are also security and performance concerns: giving an AI agent direct access to production systems means it must be heavily secured itself, and it must be efficient to avoid overloading systems with API calls or scans.
Practical Implementation Considerations:
- Requires robust data parsing and normalization capabilities
- Demands high-performance infrastructure to handle raw data volumes
- Needs comprehensive security controls to prevent the agent from becoming an attack vector
- Offers maximum flexibility but highest implementation complexity
Level 1 Integration: On Top of Existing Tools
Here the AI agent sits atop the outputs of your security tools. It doesn't ingest raw sources directly; instead, it uses the data that Level 1 tools have already collected and possibly filtered. For example, an AI agent might plug into your SIEM via API, reading the alerts and logs that the SIEM has aggregated. Or it might take the vulnerability scan results from your CSPM tool as input.
The big advantage is that the agent's job is easier – it's dealing with structured, digested data (alerts, findings) rather than the untamed firehose of raw events. This means faster development and deployment: we can leverage existing tools as "sensors" and let the AI focus on higher-level analysis. For instance, if SIEM flags an unusual login, an AI agent could grab that alert and automatically perform deeper investigation: check the user's activity history, compare it to peers, pull in threat intel on the source IP, etc., and then decide if it's truly an incident.
The downside of Level 1 integration is that we are somewhat bound by the limitations of our existing tools. If the SIEM missed an event, the agent won't see it either. Despite that, this integration layer is currently very popular: it's a pragmatic way to add AI "brains" to security operations without reinventing the whole stack³.
Level 2 Integration: Within an Aggregated Platform
This is like an extension of Level 1, where the AI agent sits at the central brain of the security stack: for example, inside the unified security platform or data lake that holds all the correlated information. If you have a security graph that already merges data from cloud, network, endpoint, etc., an AI agent can live there and have a birds-eye view. This agent would be able to see cross-domain patterns (say, a low-severity vulnerability on a server plus odd traffic from that server plus a compromised credential alert – together indicating a serious incident).
Because it has the whole picture, the agent can do very advanced correlation and even prediction. This is essentially what some forward-leaning SOCs are trying: they use an AI agent within their SIEM/XDR platform to act as a Level-2 analyst, sifting through the combined alerts and enriching them with global context.
The challenge at Level 2 is complexity; these systems can get very sophisticated (and expensive). Also, the more autonomy and breadth an agent has, the more careful we must be with testing and trust. Nonetheless, Level 2 integration is where many see the future of AI in SecOps, essentially an "autonomous analyst" that sits in the security nerve center⁴.
Level 3 Integration: Orchestration and Response Layer
At this level, AI agents operate within the orchestration and response layer, typically integrated with SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) platforms or custom automation frameworks. Here, the agent's primary role is decision-making and response coordination rather than data collection or analysis. The agent receives processed, prioritized alerts from lower levels and determines the appropriate response actions.
This integration approach is particularly powerful for incident response automation. An AI agent at Level 3 can evaluate the severity and context of an incident, then orchestrate complex response workflows: isolating affected systems, gathering forensic evidence, notifying stakeholders, and even coordinating with external threat intelligence sources. The agent essentially acts as an automated incident commander, making tactical decisions about resource allocation and response priorities.
The advantages include rapid response times and consistent execution of complex playbooks. Where a human analyst might take 30 minutes to coordinate a response across multiple teams, an AI agent can initiate actions within seconds. However, the risks are also significant: incorrect decisions at this level can have immediate operational impact. Organizations typically implement extensive approval workflows and human oversight mechanisms when deploying agents at Level 3.
Practical Implementation Considerations:
- Requires sophisticated decision-making algorithms and approval workflows
- Needs integration with ticketing systems, communication platforms, and security tools
- Demands extensive testing and rollback capabilities
- Best suited for well-defined incident types with clear response procedures
Level 4 Integration: Strategic Security Management
Beyond tactical response, some organizations are experimenting with AI agents at the strategic level, where they influence long-term security planning and policy decisions. These agents analyze trends across security incidents, evaluate the effectiveness of current controls, and recommend strategic investments or policy changes.
At Level 4, an AI agent might identify that certain types of attacks are becoming more frequent, suggest updates to security awareness training programs, or recommend infrastructure changes to reduce attack surface. This represents the most ambitious integration level, where AI agents participate in security governance and strategic planning.
However, Level 4 integration is still largely experimental. The complexity of strategic decision-making, combined with the need for business context and stakeholder alignment, makes this a challenging deployment scenario. Most organizations are focusing on Levels 1-3 before considering strategic AI integration.

Perspectives and Considerations
Playing around with these approaches over the last few weeks, I find that each has its place. Rule-based systems and security graphs are tried-and-true; they're deterministic and easy to explain to auditors. They also tend to be faster in straightforward scenarios, since they don't require heavy computation beyond applying rules. However, they struggle with complexity and novelty. We often see attackers deliberately operating in the gaps between rules or blending in with normal activity to evade fixed thresholds.
This is where AI agents shine: they can notice when a combination of factors that wasn't explicitly coded as "dangerous" nonetheless looks anomalous or matches an emerging threat pattern. The agent brings a form of adaptive intelligence to the table, in the sense that it can generalize from examples and learn from misses. As an example, a traditional system might flag any login from a new country as high risk. An AI agent, by contrast, could learn what typical travel patterns for a given user or department are, and only escalate truly unusual logins.
On the flip side, AI agents bring new challenges. They can be a "black box" if not properly tuned – why did the agent decide something was suspicious? It's critical to build in explainability. There's also the risk of over-reliance. An AI might automate 99 routine tasks correctly and then make one bizarre mistake; human analysts must remain vigilant to catch those and correct the agent's course.
Practical Implementation Tips:
- Start with AI agents as assistants, not replacements for human analysts
- Ensure the AI agent can interface with APIs of your existing tools
- Build in explainability features so decisions can be audited
- Implement proper guardrails and human oversight mechanisms
- Consider multi-agent systems for complex scenarios, but start simple
Another practical consideration is tool integration. If you have a robust set of security tools, leveraging them makes your AI agent far more effective. I've observed that an agent working with data from an "all-in-one" platform (that merges endpoint, network, cloud data) can draw richer conclusions than one that only sees one type of data. Ensure the AI agent can interface with APIs of your tools – whether it's pulling cloud metadata, querying vulnerability scan results, or even launching response actions via your SOAR.
Choosing the Right Integration Approach
So, which layer is "right" for connecting an AI agent? It truly depends on the goals and maturity of the organization implementing it:
If you're drowning in alerts and can't investigate them all, an agent at Level 1 or 2 (on top of your SIEM/XDR) can add immediate relief by intelligently automating triage.
If you suspect your current tools are missing subtle threats, you might experiment with an agent closer to Level 0 – giving it direct access to your cloud control plane to hunt for misconfigurations or suspicious activities that weren't flagged.
If you need faster incident response, Level 3 integration allows AI agents to orchestrate complex response workflows and coordinate actions across multiple systems automatically.
For strategic security improvements, Level 4 agents can analyze trends and recommend long-term policy changes, though this remains largely experimental.
For hybrid approaches, the agent might primarily read from a central platform but occasionally fetch additional data from sources when needed.
The beauty of agentic AI is its flexibility; agents can access the data they need to do their job and figure things out on their own. This means a well-designed agent isn't locked strictly to one layer; even if it "lives" at Level 1, it can reach into Level 0 sources via APIs whenever its reasoning process determines that more info is required.
The Future of AI-Security Integration
In conclusion, AI agents offer a promising path to smarter, faster security operations but success lies in choosing the right integration point and scope. If we plug an AI agent into the wrong layer (for example, letting it loose on raw data without proper filtering or context), we might get noise or erratic behavior. Integrate it too high without enough data access, and it could be blind or overly dependent on existing rules.
The sweet spot often is to let the AI agent do what machines do best (digest huge amounts of data, remember history, find hidden correlations) while humans do what we do best (provide context, set goals, and handle novel judgment calls). The synergy of rule-based systems and AI agents can yield a defense that is both predictable and adaptive; the solid foundation of rules augmented by the creativity of AI.
Future Vision: The question isn't "rules or AI?" but rather "how can we blend rules with AI for the best outcome?" Organizations that successfully integrate AI agents report 60% faster incident response times and 45% reduction in analyst workload⁵.
By integrating AI agents at the appropriate layer, be it directly at the source for raw visibility, or at the analysis layer for intelligent correlation, we can reduce risk more dynamically and respond more efficiently. The journey involves experimentation and learning, but the trend is clear: security is evolving from static controls to agile, autonomous helpers. Keeping a thoughtful eye on where and how an AI agent plugs in will ensure we ride this wave safely and effectively, turning the current AI hype into real security gains for our organizations.
