The Vision: Disappearing Architecture

When architect Eduardo Neira sought to merge a 5,000 sqft Costa Rican cliffside residence with the Monteverde cloud forest, he faced an impossible demand: "Make the walls breathe with the jungle." The solution materialized in 37 slabs of Jungle Jewel Quartzite – a stone with emerald veins mirroring epiphyte-covered trees.

Technical Transformation

ChallengeJungle Jewel Solution
Humidity warping (98% RH)Pre-stabilization with nano-silica infusion
Structural load limitsPrecision cutting to 18mm thickness (vs standard 30mm)
Color matching canopyAI vein mapping across 3 quarry blocks

Installation Innovation:

  • Laser-guided positioning ensuring vein continuity across 40m facades

  • Hidden tension anchors allowing thermal expansion without joints

  • Bio-receptive grooves cut into slabs to accelerate moss colonization

"The stone didn't just mimic the forest – it became part of its ecosystem."
– Eduardo Neira, AIA Award Acceptance Speech 2024
