In this installment of The Quantum Node, I want to take time to highlight a gifted engineer I’ve recently worked with. Michael Kusi is a Geoscience and Petroleum Engineer, but I met him through a great group called NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers). He invited me to speak to a group of young engineering students and professionals that he leads. I found his intellect and willingness to spread knowledge admirable. With his background in the energy sector and how important energy will be for future telecom technology (See article: Keep That Same Energy), I thought it would make a lot of sense to hear a bit about his journey.

Michael’s Bio:

Michael Poku Kusi is a driven and accomplished geoscience and engineering professional, currently serving as the President of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Ghana. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Geoscience and Engineering from the prestigious University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, where he honed his expertise in the intricate intersection of earth sciences and engineering principles.

With a strong academic foundation and a passion for leadership, Michael has dedicated himself to advancing the fields of geoscience and engineering, particularly within the Ghanaian context. His role as President of NSBE Ghana underscores his commitment to fostering a supportive community for Black engineers and aspiring engineers, promoting academic excellence, and driving innovation. Michael Kusi is poised to make significant contributions to the energy and engineering sectors, leveraging his comprehensive knowledge and leadership acumen.

Michael’s Education and Professional Journey:

The Petroleum Geoscience combines geology, geophysics, and engineering to uncover and extract energy resources that power our world.

Through coursework and hands-on projects, I've developed skills in:

- Interpreting seismic data and well logs to identify potential hydrocarbon reservoirs
- Analyzing geological structures and reservoirs to understand the subsurface geology
- Applying geoscience techniques to optimize exploration and production, ensuring safe and efficient operations

The program has also given me insights into the latest technologies and industry trends, such as advanced seismic imaging, reservoir modeling, and enhanced oil recovery techniques.

Petroleum geoscience is a dynamic field with numerous career opportunities in the energy industry. Graduates can work in roles such as:

- Exploration geologists, identifying new hydrocarbon prospects
- Reservoir engineers, optimizing production and recovery
- Geoscience consultants, providing expertise to operating companies
- Research scientists, advancing our understanding of subsurface systems

What I find most exciting about this field is the opportunity to contribute to the global energy mix while minimizing environmental impact. As the world transitions to a more sustainable energy future, petroleum geoscience will play a critical role in ensuring a reliable and efficient supply of energy.
