Shubman Gill scored a century in the first Test match being played at Edgbaston.

The second match of the five-Test series between India and England is being played at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Indian batsmen performed brilliantly on the first day. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal played a brilliant innings of 87 runs, while captain Shubman Gill scored his seventh Test century with his brilliant batting. This is his second consecutive century after becoming the captain, and with this innings he made many records in his name.

Historical record: Third Indian captain

Shubman Gill has become the third Indian captain to score a century in two consecutive Test matches against England. Before him, this feat was achieved by Mohammad Azharuddin (Lord’s and Old Trafford in 1990) and Vijay Hazare (1951-52). Gill scored 147 runs in the first innings of the Leeds Test, and now he has maintained his form by scoring a century at Edgbaston as well.

Gill’s excellent form

Since getting the captaincy, Shubman Gill is in tremendous form. After an innings of 147 runs in Leeds, now he has scored a century at Edgbaston as well. Gill remained unbeaten on 114 runs off 216 balls till the end of the first day’s play. His eyes will now be on converting this century into a big innings.

By the end of the first day, India scored 310 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Along with Gill, Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten after scoring 41 runs in 67 balls. Both the batsmen will try to continue this momentum on the second day as well, so that India can reach a strong position.

With Shubman Gill scoring his second consecutive century on the England tour, he has left behind former Team India veterans Ravi Shastri and MS Dhoni in terms of scoring the most centuries in international cricket. While Shastri had played a total of 15 century innings in his career, Shubman Gill has managed to score 16 centuries so far.
