In a commendable move toward student health and wellbeing, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has extended the Water Bell System to all private schools across the state. After witnessing success in government and aided institutions, this initiative aims to ensure that students stay hydrated throughout the school day.

Water Bells to Ring in Better Health

The Directorate of Private Schools (DPS) in Chennai has issued a circular to all District Educational Officers (DEOs), mandating immediate implementation of the water bell system in private schools. The circular emphasizes:

  • Students must bring water bottles from home

  • Teachers should explain the importance of hydration during morning assemblies

  • Dedicated water bells (distinct from regular school bells) should ring at fixed times, such as 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM

  • Students are allowed 2–3 minutes to drink water in class, without disrupting lessons

The aim is to make hydration a habit and prevent dehydration-related health issues in children.

Welcomed by Parents and Educators

The move has received strong support from parents and educationists alike.
K. Saravanababu, a parent from Coimbatore, praised the initiative, sharing how his Class 3 daughter often returned home tired and dehydrated. He believes the water bell will encourage children to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Educationist K. Leninbharathi, who had previously petitioned the government to implement this system in all schools, said regular water intake significantly improves student focus, concentration, and physical health. He urged DEOs to closely monitor implementation in private institutions.

Already in Practice in Some Schools

According to R. Nandakumar, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Nursery, Matriculation and CBSE Schools Association, many private schools had already introduced the water bell system voluntarily. He emphasized its practical benefits and expressed confidence that full-scale implementation would greatly enhance student wellbeing across the board.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of the Water Bell System in private schools is a simple yet impactful measure that promotes healthy habits among children. As Tamil Nadu takes proactive steps to prioritize student health, this initiative is a great example of how small policy changes can lead to big improvements in school environments.
