Types of Stainless Steel: An Overview

Stainless steel is a type of alloy composed mainly of iron that is engineered for tough environments as well as for resisting corrosion. Each one of them is distinct in its own way, having features such as industry strength to medical cleanliness which makes them useful well beyond the kitchen.

A grade of stainless steel affects its durability, performance, and overall cost. Take, for instance, a pipe, cold drawn bar, or a high-strength U-tube — choosing the right grade can make a significant difference. At Heavy Metal Tubes (India) Pvt. Ltd., we understand the importance of selecting the right material for your application.

In this blog, we’ll explain the types of stainless steel, delve into their main characteristics and applications, and share key pointers to help you choose the most suitable one for your requirements.

What Gives Stainless Steel Its Shine and Strength?

Steel is made “stainless” when it has at least 10.5% chromium. This chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to produce a thin stable oxide layer which forms on the steel’s surface. That’s the element which gives it the rust and corrosion resistant quality even in the presence of moisture, chemicals, or acid.

Also included in the mix are elements like nickel, molybdenum, nitrogen, and manganese which we put in to improve certain properties — from increase in strength to better performance in extreme heat or salt. It is these variations which create the many types of stainless steels.

Main Categories of Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is divided into several main categories, each designed for specific applications and environments. Here are the primary types:

1. Austenitic Stainless Steel

  • Most common type

  • High in chromium and nickel

  • Excellent corrosion resistance and formability

  • Non-magnetic in most cases

  • Used in kitchen equipment, piping, and architectural applications Example grades: 304, 316

2. Ferritic Stainless Steel

  • Contains chromium but little or no nickel

  • Magnetic and more affordable than austenitic types

  • Good resistance to stress corrosion cracking

  • Common in automotive and industrial applications Example grades: 430, 409

3. Martensitic Stainless Steel

  • High in carbon and chromium

  • Strong and hardenable by heat treatment

  • Moderate corrosion resistance

  • Used for tools, blades, and cutlery Example grades: 410, 420

4. Duplex Stainless Steel

  • A mix of austenitic and ferritic structures

  • High strength and excellent corrosion resistance

  • Suitable for harsh environments like offshore and chemical processing Example grades: 2205, 2507

5. Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel (PH)

  • Can be heat-treated for high strength

  • Good corrosion resistance with enhanced mechanical properties

  • Often used in aerospace and high-performance applications Example grades: 17–4 PH, 15–5 PH
