Ravi Shastri Hypes Bumrah from the Commentary Box as India Dominates

Ravi Shastri

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri once again heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah during Day 3 of the Edgbaston Test, while the premier pacer—rested for workload management—listened from the sidelines with a smile. Despite Bumrah’s absence, which drew criticism including from Shastri himself, India dismantled England’s batting, reducing them to 87/5 at one stage.

Mohammed Siraj stepped up in style with a brilliant six-wicket haul, ably supported by Akash Deep’s four wickets. Still, Ravi Shastri couldn’t help but imagine the impact Bumrah might have had. “Can you imagine if Jasprit was out there in the middle with that many runs on the board? He’s listening. England wouldn’t have been happy,” Shastri remarked as Bumrah listened in, smiling at the commentary.

With Jasprit Bumrah rested for the second Test, the team management handed Akash Deep a crucial opportunity—and he didn’t disappoint. The young pacer justified his selection by picking up four wickets, providing vital support to Mohammed Siraj, who led the attack with a sensational six-wicket haul.

Mohammed Siraj delivered a career-best performance in England, becoming only the second Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma (6/58 in 1986) to claim six wickets at Edgbaston. Despite a 303-run partnership between Harry Brook and Jamie Smith that threatened to swing the match, Siraj remained composed. Using the second new ball effectively, he dismantled England’s lower order—removing Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir in quick succession. His efforts helped India regain control of the Test. By stumps, India had built a lead of 244 runs, reaching 64/1 with KL Rahul and Karun Nair at the crease.
