๐Ÿ”— Simplifying AWS Networking with Transit Gateway (TGW): Real-World Use Cases

As cloud environments grow, managing connections between multiple VPCs (Virtual Private Clouds) and on-premises networks becomes challenging. AWS Transit Gateway (TGW) is a solution designed to simplify this complexity by acting as a central hub to route traffic between VPCs and beyond โ€” like spokes connected to a hub.

Letโ€™s explore how TGW helps in different network setups, using real-world examples that many companies face today.

๐Ÿง  Connecting VPCs Within the Same Region

Imagine you're running several workloads in the same AWS region โ€” letโ€™s say us-east-1. You have:

  • A VPC for developers (VPC-Dev)

  • A VPC for your application servers (VPC-App)

  • A VPC for your databases (VPC-DB)

Traditionally, you would use VPC peering to connect them. But as the number of VPCs grows, this becomes complex and hard to manage โ€” each VPC needs to connect directly to the others, and routing tables must be updated manually.

With Transit Gateway, all VPCs simply attach to the TGW. It acts as the central router, handling traffic between VPCs with transitive routing and centralized control. You can define routing rules to control who can talk to whom, making the whole setup more scalable and secure.

๐Ÿง  Visualize it like this:

           [VPC-Dev]
               |
        [Transit Gateway]
           / \
    [VPC-App] [VPC-DB]

No need for a messy mesh of peering connections. Just a clean hub-and-spoke model.

๐ŸŒ Connecting Across AWS Regions

Many businesses run workloads across multiple AWS regions for better performance or compliance. But how do you connect services in one region to those in another?

Transit Gateway supports inter-region peering. You can create TGWs in two regions โ€” say us-east-1 and eu-west-1 โ€” and peer them together. This lets traffic flow securely between the regions over the AWS backbone, which is encrypted and optimized for low latency.

Letโ€™s say your company hosts its main web app and database in the US, and an analytics platform in Europe. You can connect the analytics system to the US-based database through TGW peering.

๐Ÿ”— Visual representation:

 Region 1 (us-east-1) Region 2 (eu-west-1)
   [VPC-App] [VPC-Analytics]
        | |
    [TGW-east1]  <--peering-->   [TGW-eu1]

This approach keeps traffic private, secure, and manageable, even across continents.

๐Ÿข Extending to On-Premises Networks

Many organizations still have systems running in on-premises data centers. TGW makes it easy to connect these networks with your AWS environment through VPN or AWS Direct Connect (a dedicated, high-speed connection).

For example, imagine a bank with a data center in Hyderabad and workloads hosted in Mumbai (AWS ap-south-1 region). You can create a VPN or Direct Connect attachment from the on-prem location to TGW in Mumbai. Once done, your on-prem apps can securely access cloud-based databases and services, and vice versa.

๐Ÿข Here's how that looks:

        [On-prem] โ”€โ”€ VPN/Direct Connect โ”€โ”€> [TGW]
                                              |
                                -----------------------------
                                | | |
                           [VPC1] [VPC2] [VPC3]

This setup enables seamless hybrid networking โ€” no need for complex tunneling or manual route setups.

๐Ÿš€ Final Thoughts

AWS Transit Gateway transforms how you connect VPCs and on-prem networks. Instead of dealing with a web of VPC peering or point-to-point VPNs, you get a centralized, scalable, and secure solution using the hub-and-spoke model.

Whether youโ€™re building apps within a region, spanning continents, or integrating on-premises infrastructure, Transit Gateway helps streamline your cloud networking.
