Shubman Gill scored an impressive 269 runs in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test. Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has criticized Gill for narrowly missing out on a triple century in the ongoing second Test against England. This match, part of the five-match series between England and India, is being played at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Shubman Gill delivered a remarkable batting performance throughout the game. In the first innings, he scored a commanding 269 runs, helping India post a massive total of 587 all out. In the second innings, he followed up with a brilliant 161 runs, pushing India to declare at 427/6 and setting England a challenging target of 608 runs to win.

With a combined total of 430 runs in the match, Shubman Gill shattered several records. He surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in a single Test match. He also broke Virat Kohli’s record for the highest Test score by an Indian captain. Additionally, his 269 runs in the first innings stand as the highest score by an Indian player on English soil.

Yograj Singh Criticizes Shubman Gill for Missing Out on a Triple Century

While the cricket world applauded Shubman Gill’s impressive batting performance in the Edgbaston Test, Yograj Singh expressed disappointment over Gill falling short of a triple century. Yograj also criticized him for losing his wicket to a poor shot in the first innings.

“A player’s hunger should never fade. Simply saying ‘I’ve scored 200’ or ‘I’ve made 250’—okay, well played. But I don’t think that’s enough. That’s your job, brother. So why did you get out?” Yograj told the Times of India.

“Go on, make 300, then 350, even 400—that will come with time. But you have to keep pushing. To me, getting out at any stage due to a careless shot is almost a criminal offense. How did you get out? Were you tired? Did you play straight into the fielder’s hands?” he added.

“This player, Shubman, is really talented. Maybe every Indian cricketer—every one of the eleven players—has benefited from his training. That’s a huge achievement for him. The hard work he’s put in over the past seven years is finally paying off,” Yograj continued.

Meanwhile, thanks to Shubman Gill remarkable batting in both innings, India has gained a commanding position in the Edgbaston Test. They set an imposing target of 608 runs and started the final innings strongly by taking five English wickets for less than 90 runs.
