On-Field Banter: Ravindra Jadeja Quiet Defiance and Gill’s Leadership

Clips of on-field conversations among Indian players—captured by the stump mic—have become viral highlights during the first two Tests against England. From cheeky remarks, often from vice-captain Rishabh Pant, to strategic discussions and playful banter with English players, these moments reveal the team’s spirit and communication.

One such viral clip from Sunday featured Ravindra Jadeja seemingly refusing an instruction from captain Shubman Gill. Though the exact over wasn’t clear, it likely happened during the partnership between Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith. Standing at slip, Gill signaled Jadeja to bring the long-on fielder closer, anticipating Stokes stepping out to attack. Jadeja, however, declined, prompting Gill to quietly accept the decision.

Gill said, “Jaddu bhai, usko bhi upar lelo yaar. Marne do ek aage badke (Jadeja, bring him up too. Let him try hitting one by stepping out).”

Ravindra Jadeja replied, “Usko udhar kuch kaam nahi hai. Atleast jaaye toh pakadne wala bhi toh hona chaiye niche. Khada toh udhar bhi kardo, but pakadne wala toh chaiye (He’s of no use over there. At least if the ball goes that way, someone should be there to catch it. You can place him there, sure, but there should be someone ready to catch).”

India script history at Edgbaston

After 19 previous attempts in Birmingham, India finally celebrated their maiden victory at the venue in emphatic fashion, crushing England by 336 runs—their biggest-ever away Test win—to level the ongoing five-match series 1-1. Shubman Gill was central to the triumph, scoring 269 and 161, the most runs ever by a captain in a single Test match. Yet, Gill was quick to credit pacer Akash Deep, whose phenomenal match figures of 10/187 (4/88 and 6/99) broke Chetan Sharma’s long-standing Indian record for best bowling figures in a Test in England.

“Yesterday, I think, getting through the top order is never easy,” Gill said in the post-match press conference.

“The spell of Akash Deep, how he got those two wickets, kind of gave the confidence to everyone that we can win this Test match. When he came in this morning with the ball hitting the cracks, the odd ball seaming, that really instilled confidence in all of us that, yes, we can do it,” he added.

The third Test begins on Thursday, July 10, at the iconic Lord’s ground.
