I still remember the first-time people started worrying about computers taking over jobs. (Yes, I’m that old!) My father, a banker, was one of the early adopters, eager to learn computers when we got our first PC running Windows 3.1. I was just a kid, but I was fascinated. Back then, there were a lot of fear around people were losing jobs and many believed that Computers would replace humans.
But as I grew up, I saw the opposite happen. Computers did not take jobs; it replaced and created new ones. It transformed industries, opened opportunities, and made us more productive. The skeptics were wrong. Computers did not destroy us, it empowered us.
Fast forward to today, and we are back in familiar territory. AI is the new disruptor. And once again, we are seeing layoffs, restructuring, and a wave of anxiety. But this time, the stakes feel higher. As a long-time believer in the power of technology and someone who has worked extensively in regulatory reporting and compliance, I believe the conversation we need to have now isn’t just about what AI can do, but how we govern it.
When AI Goes Unchecked: Real Risks in the Real World
AI is already shaping how we work, hire, communicate, and make decisions. But without proper governance, it can go very wrong, very fast. Here are a few real-world risks that highlight why guardrails are not optional:
1. The Echo Chamber Effect
Recommendation algorithms are great at keeping us engaged, but they can also trap us in content bubbles. What starts as personalization can quickly become bias reinforcement or misinformation.

As organizations, we have a choice. We can rush to adopt AI for short-term gains, or we can build it thoughtfully, with governance embedded from the start. This isn’t just about avoiding penalties or PR disasters. It’s about building trust with employees, customers, and society.

I’m not anti-AI. I believe it’s one of the most powerful tools of our time. But just like we wouldn’t let someone drive on a highway without training and traffic rules, we can’t let AI operate without clear boundaries.
