Atopic Dermatitis, Causes, Symptoms & How to Manage?


Atopic dermatitis which is also known as Atopic eczema is a chronic skin condition. The condition is observed from childhood to adulthood, leaving dry, itchy and inflamed skin patches. There is no such evidence for the exact cause of this problem but there can be immune system issues, environmental problems that may trigger this condition.
What are the Symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis:
One would observe the following symptoms in the Atopic eczema condition, such as:
Severe itching: A rash that is associated with intense itching.
Dry skin: You may observe your skin being extremely dry and may have easy cracking.
Redness: The skin in the affected area looks more in red and inflamed.
Rash: There would be rashes that are mostly in patches and different shapes.
Lichenification: The skin in atopic dermatitis is thick and looks more leathery due to the scratching.
What are the major Causes of Atopic Dermatitis:
Genetics: Most of the time, one may see this condition due to the family history.
Immune system dysfunction: Due to the immune system overreacting to outside allergies, this condition may show up on an individual’s skin.
Environmental factors: In some cases, the environment where you are living may cause this problem like dry air and cold weather or exposure to certain irritants, allergens can also trigger this condition.
Stress: Not so common but stress can also be a potential reason for triggering this condition in some people.
How to Control the Effect of Atopic Dermatitis?
Managing a condition needs personal care and specialist guidance. Follow the steps below to get better control of the condition:
Moisturizing: Must and should follow a moisturizing routine to give proper hydration to the skin.
Topical corticosteroids: Mostly, your skin specialist would suggest these creams to reduce the itching and inflammation if there is any.
Topical calcineurin inhibitors: The specialist may suggest this medication to control your itching and inflammation.
Wet wrap therapy: You may also be guided to wrap the effect area with the wet wrap to soothe and hydrate the skin.
Phototherapy: Some doctors treat the inflammation by using ultraviolet light exposure.
How to Prevent Atopic Dermatitis?
If the condition is affected due to regular conditions and stress, then managing stress by doing yoga, medication is very helpful. If the condition is genetic then managing it through lifestyle changes and medication is a must in case of severe cases.
