Day 3 Drama at Lord’s: Gill’s Fiery Clash with Crawley Amid India’s Resilience
Day 3 at Lord’s ended with unexpected drama as Shubman Gill erupted in frustration towards England’s Zak Crawley, accusing him of deliberately wasting time just after India had matched England’s first innings total. Amid ongoing off-field discussions, Team India finally addressed the heated “theatrics” that unfolded in the final over.
KL Rahul’s gritty 177-ball century anchored India to 387 — exactly England’s score — but the innings once again exposed India’s tail-end vulnerabilities, a concern that had surfaced during the series opener at Leeds.
With only six minutes remaining for England to start their second innings, India’s bowlers prepared to deliver two overs. Jasprit Bumrah took the new ball as Crawley prepared to face him. Tensions flared when Crawley abruptly pulled away from the third ball, complaining about the sight screen, provoking a fiery outburst from Gill who shouted, “Grow some f***ing balls!”
The drama intensified two balls later when Crawley, after defending a length ball, removed his gloves and called for a physio due to apparent hand pain. Gill charged at Crawley again, sparking another heated exchange and sealing a tense close to an already gripping day.
Team India breaks silence on last-over drama
Speaking to the press at the end of Day 3 in London, KL Rahul explained India’s intent to bowl two overs before the session closed. “There were six minutes left. It is a no-brainer that any team will bowl two overs with six minutes to go, but it was a bit of theatrics at the end,” he said.
Rahul added that India were eager for a late wicket to unsettle England early in their second innings. “We know how difficult it is for a batter to come to bat for two overs when you’ve been in the field all day. A wicket at the end of the day’s play would’ve been perfect for us. Tomorrow, even without that, I think we would’ve been fired up anyway.”
However, Rahul also showed empathy for Crawley’s perspective. “What happened at the end is just part of the game now,” he said. “I understand from an opening batter’s point of view. I know exactly what was going on, and everyone knows exactly what was going on. But an opening batter will understand completely what happened in the last five minutes.”
