What is Software Architecture?


Software architecture is the foundational structure of a software system. It encompasses the essential components that define how a system is designed, organized, and operates. At its core, software architecture combines structure, architecture characteristics, architecture decisions, and design principles.
Structure
The structure of a software system refers to the architectural style or model used in its implementation. This includes frameworks such as microservices, layered architectures, or microkernel designs. Each structure outlines how different modules or components interact and function within the system, providing a blueprint for system behavior and scalability.
Architecture Characteristics
Architecture characteristics define the success criteria of a system. These include qualities such as availability, scalability, and other system "-ilities" that are critical for ensuring performance and reliability. These characteristics are often referred to as architectural requirements or non-functional requirements, as they shape how the system behaves under various conditions rather than what the system does.
Architecture Decisions
Architecture decisions are the rules and constraints that govern how a system should be constructed. These decisions influence system behavior, interaction between components, and how various layers are accessed. For example, in a layered architecture, business services might be restricted from accessing the database directly, enforcing separation of concerns and improving maintainability.
Design Principles
Design principles serve as guidelines rather than strict rules. They help developers make informed decisions during implementation to ensure consistency and adaptability. Unlike architectural decisions, which are rigid and enforceable, design principles offer flexibility. An example of a design principle is: "Developers should leverage asynchronous messaging between services in a microservice architecture."
In summary, software architecture provides a high-level view of a system's structure and guides the development process through well-defined rules and principles. It ensures that the final system is robust, scalable, and maintainable.
