AeroX : Airport Service System Enhancing Air Travel Experience

Have you ever been at an airport, juggling multiple apps just to book a flight, order food, or find your lost bag?
That frustrating experience inspired us to build AeroX - an all-in-one Airport Service Management System, developed as our second-year project at SLIIT as a five member team. This blog walks you through what AeroX does, how we built it, and why we believe it could shape the future of airport travel.
The Problem: Airport Services Are Fragmented
Airports are filled with digital services but most of them don’t talk to each other.
You book flights on one app, rent a car on another, and if you lose something, you’re left filling out forms manually. Food ordering and duty-free shopping? Still mostly offline in many places.
This leads to:
Long queues
Missed updates
Stressful experiences
Poor service visibility for providers
We wanted to change that.
The Solution: Meet AeroX
AeroX is a web-based platform that centralizes and simplifies core airport services into one seamless system. It’s designed to improve the experience for both passengers and airport service providers.
What can you do with AeroX?
Flight Management: Book, modify, and track flights in real time.
Air Taxi & Vehicle Rentals: Fast air transfers and customizable ground transport.
Food Pre-Ordering & Restaurant Reservations: No more standing in long queues.
Duty-Free Pre-Shopping: Buy products before you fly , stress-free.
Lost & Found System: Track and reclaim lost items efficiently.
Currency Converter & Banking Services: Get exchange rates and find nearby ATMs.
It’s not just for travelers, it also helps airport staff, restaurant owners, and duty-free vendors streamline operations.
Our Motivation
Time Efficiency: One app, multiple solutions.
Enhanced Experience: Minimized stress through real-time updates and automation.
Operational Benefits: Better service management and inventory tracking.
Security & Privacy: Encrypted transactions and data protection.
Our Goals
Unify all airport services under one platform.
Improve convenience for passengers and efficiency for providers.
Enable seamless integration with third-party APIs (flight tracking, maps, payments).
Prioritize usability, scalability, and security.
How We Built It
We developed AeroX using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, and Node.js) chosen for its scalability, modern architecture, and real-time performance. This stack allowed us to build a responsive frontend, a secure backend, and a flexible database structure to handle diverse airport services.
Our development process followed the Agile Scrum methodology, enabling us to work in focused sprints with regular standups, reviews, and retrospectives. This helped us prioritize features, adapt to changes, and deliver a functional system in iterations with continuous integration, testing, and stakeholder feedback guiding every stage.
Key Tools & Methods:
Figma for UI/UX design.
GitHub Actions for CI/CD.
MongoDB for scalable data storage.
REST APIs, Google Maps API and ADSBx (flight status) for integrations.
E-mail/ Whatsapp Message integrations.
Testing & Evaluation:
We conducted extensive testing, including:
Unit & Integration Testing
Performance and Security Checks
Usability Testing with Real Users
Business Impact Evaluation
Our goal was to ensure the system remains reliable, user-friendly, and scalable under real-world airport conditions.
Real-World Benchmarking
We studied several top airports during our research phase, including:
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) – USA
Dubai International Airport (DXB) – UAE
Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) – India
Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) – Sri Lanka
While most offered digital booking and basic services, none provided a centralized, all-in-one experience like AeroX. This inspired us to build a truly integrated model that could improve efficiency at every level from passengers to providers.
Final Thoughts
Airports should be more than just places we pass through they should offer comfort, speed, and smart services that match the pace of modern travel. With AeroX, we aimed to reimagine the passenger journey by integrating key airport services into one seamless digital experience.
For us, this wasn’t just a university project it was a chance to solve a real-world problem with technology. As aspiring developers, we’re proud to contribute to the growing conversation around smart mobility, digital transformation, and user-focused innovation.
If you’re in the travel, tech, or operations space or simply someone who loves to travel we’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, or feedback. Together, let’s build smarter airports for a smarter future.
