Emerging Tech Meets Equity: Nottingham Hosts Groundbreaking AI Summer Programme

The University of Nottingham, ranked 97th globally and 17th in the UK by QS, continues to distinguish itself through research excellence, global outreach, and landmark innovations such as MRI and ibuprofen. In addition to being named Sports University of the Year 2024 and ranking seventh nationally for research power (REF 2021), it leads the Universities for Nottingham initiative, which promotes regional prosperity and wellbeing.
As part of its commitment to Widening Participation, the University’s School of Computer Science is currently running the Google DeepMind Research Ready Scheme, an eight-week summer internship designed for 12 undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering, Google DeepMind, and the Hg Foundation, the programme aims to equip participants with practical skills and exposure to careers in Artificial Intelligence (AI), one of the fastest-growing sectors shaping industries from healthcare to finance.
Throughout the internship, students are collaborating with researchers and professionals to strengthen their technical capabilities and engage in real-world AI projects. They also benefit from access to campus facilities, dedicated mentorship, and the opportunity to present their research findings upon completion. Notably, student testimonials reflect both the academic and personal growth this initiative fosters, whether it be through expanding career horizons or reinforcing a socially responsible approach to AI. According to Professor Ender Ozcan, the programme specifically addresses gaps in access to support networks, aiming to foster greater confidence and readiness among underrepresented students pursuing future AI careers. This initiative exemplifies how targeted academic support can open meaningful pathways into emerging technologies for all learners.
