Shubman Gill Blames ‘One Bad Hour’ for India’s Loss in 3rd Test vs England at Lord’s

India’s narrow defeat in the third Test against England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground has sparked introspection within the team, and captain Shubman Gill didn’t hold back in his post-match comments. Speaking candidly after the match, Gill attributed the loss to "one bad hour" of cricket that ultimately cost India the game.

Chasing a modest target of 193 runs on the final day, India looked well within reach of victory. However, a sudden top-order collapse saw the team slump from 78 for 2 to 112 for 8, throwing the chase into turmoil. Despite a late fightback led by Ravindra Jadeja, who remained unbeaten with a defiant half-century, the team fell short by 22 runs.

Gill, who has taken over the captaincy in this series, acknowledged that the team had fought hard throughout the five days but lamented that a short lapse in concentration turned the match on its head. “We didn’t bat well during that crucial one-hour phase—both yesterday evening and this morning. That was the turning point,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of partnerships in tight chases. “All we needed was one solid 50-run stand in the middle, and we could have crossed the line. We let the pressure get to us at the wrong time,” Gill added.

The young skipper pointed out a few key moments that didn’t go India’s way, including Rishabh Pant’s unfortunate run-out in the first innings, which potentially cost India a sizable lead. He acknowledged the resilience shown by the lower order but stressed the need for better application at the top.

Despite the disappointment, Gill remained composed and optimistic. “It was a close Test match. We’ll take the lessons and come back stronger in the next one.”

With the series finely poised, India now heads into the fourth Test with plenty to reflect upon. One bad hour may have decided this match, but the next opportunity to bounce back is just around the corner.
