Brian Lara Blames IPL for West Indies’ Batting Collapse Against Australia

Former West Indies legend Brian Lara took a veiled dig at the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday, holding the tournament partly responsible for West Indies’ shocking batting performance in the third Test against Australia. The Caribbean side was bundled out for just 27 runs—the second-lowest total in Test history—during the maiden Pink Ball Test at Sabina Park.

Mitchell Starc ripped through the lineup with a record six-wicket haul, while Scott Boland claimed a hat-trick as the hosts collapsed in just 87 balls. Australia clinched a 176-run victory to seal a 3-0 whitewash in the Frank Worrell Trophy series.

Speaking on the cricket podcast Stick To Cricket, Brian Lara attributed West Indies’ decline to IPL and other T20 leagues, claiming players now view international cricket as a platform to attract franchise contracts rather than striving to excel in domestic cricket.

“We played first-class cricket and some of us even played county cricket to try to get into the West Indies team,” Brian Lara said. “We are now using the West Indies team as a stepping stone, as a stage for us to get contracts around. And that is not a fault of the player.”

David Lloyd Blames ‘Big Three’ for West Indies’ Decline; Hooper Calls for Accountability

Former England cricketer David Lloyd criticized India, Australia, and England for contributing to the decline of West Indies cricket. Speaking on a podcast, Lloyd accused the “big three” of monopolizing cricket’s financial resources.

“The big three take all the money. England, Australia, India take off the money. They get the big broadcast deals. You’ve got to have a more even distribution to allow West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka to compete,” Lloyd said.

Meanwhile, former West Indies captain Carl Hooper, speaking on ABC Cricket after their 0-3 Test series defeat to Australia, demanded accountability from Cricket West Indies.

I really think a few heads should roll for this because they’ve made some decisions and this is the result. They made wholesale, massive changes that I think weren’t needed. To make such changes and then get results like this, Cricket West Indies have to hold up their hands and be accountable,” Hooper asserted.
