In the ongoing five-match Test series in England, India have lost two matches they should have won. Shubman Gill and Co allowed England to chase 371 in the first Test and then failed to chase down 193 in the third Test played at Lord’s, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead in the series.

Jasprit Bumrah was involved in both those defeats. Interestingly, the one Test match he missed – the second in Birmingham – was won by India by a record 336 runs. Ahead of the series, Bumrah had informed the team management that he would play only three of the five Tests to manage his workload.

India need to win the fourth Test, starting July 23 in Manchester, to stay in the series. While Bumrah seems certain to play in this crucial encounter, former England cricketer David Lloyd believes that if the series is tied in Manchester, playing the fourth Test might force the Indian management to field him in the fifth Test as well.

Speaking to Talksport Cricket, Lloyd said: “It is what he has said and what coach Gautam Gambhir has said that he will play three of the five Test matches. So, he has a choice. There are two matches left. He has played two matches. If he stays true to his words, he should play the next match at Old Trafford.

He further added, “If he (Bumrah) plays the next match at Old Trafford and the result becomes 2-2, then you would think he will play at the Oval as well. I am speculating a bit more right now, but I think he will play the next match and see where the team gets. If England go 3-1 ahead, he will not play. But if the score is 2-2, then he will play at the Oval.”

When reminded that India’s only win on this tour came after resting Bumrah, Lloyd replied, “That is extraordinary. Some people had said that when Bumrah plays, India loses more, he is one of the best bowlers in the world. And his action is weird, but he is a good bowler overall.”

Since his debut, Bumrah has played 47 Test matches, of which India have won 20 and lost 23. In the same period, he has not played 27 Test matches – of which India have won 19, lost only five, and drawn three.
