Joe Root Returns to No. 1 in ICC Test Batting Rankings; Jasprit Bumrah Holds Top Bowler Spot

Joe Root delivered a commanding performance for England in the Lord’s Test against India, crafting a brilliant century to anchor his team. This stellar showing propelled Joe Root past fellow Englishman Harry Brook in the latest ICC Test batter rankings, which were updated on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
Brook, who recently held the top spot, slipped to second after scoring only 34 runs across two innings at Lord’s. Joe Root scores of 104 and 40 in that match earned him crucial rating points, reinstating him as the world’s premier Test batter for the eighth time in his career.
At age 34, Joe Root becomes the second-oldest player to lead the Test batting charts since Kumar Sangakkara, who was ranked No.1 at 37 in December 2014. Joe Root now has 888 rating points.
The latest rankings update also recorded notable movements among other players:
Steve Smith climbed to fourth place following his gritty 48-run knock in Australia’s third Test against the West Indies in Jamaica.
Cameron Green surged 16 spots to 29th after contributing scores of 46 and 42 in the same low-scoring match
