Andre Russell made his international debut for the West Indies in 2010. Now, the 37-year-old West Indies all-rounder has announced that he will retire from international cricket, with his final appearance set for the upcoming T20I series against Australia.
Russell has been recognized as one of the most explosive hitters for the West Indies in T20 internationals. To date, he has played 84 T20Is, amassing 1078 runs in 73 innings at an average of 22.0, with a formidable strike rate of 163.09. He has registered three half-centuries in the format. As a bowler, Russell has taken 61 wickets, with his best figures of 3/19 coming against England in 2023. He was also a key member of the West Indies squads that clinched the ICC T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016.
In ODIs, Russell has featured in 56 matches, scoring 1034 runs from 47 innings at an average of 27.21, including four fifties and a highest score of 92. He has also picked up 70 wickets in the format. Additionally, Russell played a single Test match during his career, making his debut against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2010.
Andre Russell to retire after second T20I against Australia
Andre Russell has announced that he will retire from international cricket after playing the first two T20Is against Australia in his home country of Jamaica. The five-match T20I series between West Indies and Australia will kick off with games on July 20 and July 22 at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
Russell will be part of the West Indies squad for these first two matches. For the remaining three games of the series, Matthew Forde will take his place in the squad.

Reflecting on his retirement, Russell emphasized that representing the West Indies has been the highlight of his career.
“Words cannot describe what it meant to me. Wearing the West Indies colors is one of the proudest accomplishments of my life. As a child, I never imagined reaching this level, but the more I played and grew to love cricket, the more I realized what was possible,” Russell shared.
He continued, “This motivated me to always improve, because I wanted to make my mark in the maroon and inspire future generations.”
In other news, Australia’s tour of the West Indies in 2025 will wrap up with the fifth T20I on July 28 at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts. This follows Australia’s recent 3-0 sweep of the West Indies in the Test series.
