‘How can you say I am not interested in Tests?’ Former selector Paranjpe reveals conversation with Rohit Sharma

Jatin Paranjpe told that, Rohit said that he lives for Test cricket. I think he will be the first person to say this.
Former BCCI selector Jatin Paranjpe believes that Rohit Sharma retired early from Test cricket. He could have achieved much more in the red ball format than he did. The Indian legend ended his Test cricket career unexpectedly. He announced his retirement just before the team selection for the England tour, leaving the board in need of a new Test captain.
How do you know I am not interested in Tests: Rohit
Recalling the conversation between Rohit and him on a podcast named Century of Stories, Paranjape said, “At that time Rohit was not a part of the Indian Test team. We had a conversation in which Rohit said, I started playing cricket only for the red ball, Jatin. How can you say that I am not interested in Test cricket. At this time I was convinced that he is completely dedicated to this format.”
Paranjape said that looking at Rohit Sharma’s way of playing and his technique, it can be believed that he could have achieved a greater position in Test cricket. “He himself had once said that he lives for Test cricket. I think he himself would also agree that he could have done more in Test cricket.”
Could have tied the series
Jatin also discussed a very surprising decision of Rohit Sharma during the 2024-25 Australia Test series. He told that Rohit pulled himself out of the Sydney Test, whereas, he had earlier expressed his desire to play in the England tour.
Paranjape further said, “I myself was a bit disappointed when he pulled himself out of the Sydney Test because, by winning that match, we could have tied the series.” At that time Rohit Sharma was busy in IPL 2025 for Mumbai Indians, due to which there was more talk about his sudden separation from Test cricket.
