Opposition Targets Govt Over Pahalgam, Sindoor, Trump Remarks

As the Monsoon Session of Parliament kicked off today, the Congress party and members of the INDIA bloc came forward with adjournment notices in both Houses, pressing for a debate on the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and India’s military response, dubbed Operation Sindoor.
Multiple opposition leaders have raised sharp questions regarding national security, foreign policy strategy, and India’s diplomatic stance—particularly in light of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that he brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala submitted a notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha, requesting the suspension of all business to urgently deliberate on the April 22 Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. He emphasized the need to address the incident comprehensively and sought accountability from the Centre.
Renuka Chowdhury, another senior Congress parliamentarian, also filed a Rule 267 notice, pointing to "severe lapses in internal security" that led to the loss of innocent lives. Her notice demanded a discussion on India’s foreign policy actions following the operation, especially Trump’s assertion that his trade negotiations played a role in ending the cross-border hostilities.
Chowdhury argued that such claims, if true, would directly contradict the Shimla Agreement, which bars third-party mediation in India-Pakistan disputes. “It is vital for the Indian public to know whether our sovereignty has been compromised,” she said.
Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, echoed similar sentiments. His adjournment notice highlighted the urgency of addressing the contradictory signals surrounding the ceasefire. “The timing and nature of the ceasefire announcement post-Operation Sindoor has created confusion, especially in light of President Trump’s controversial remarks,” he said. Gogoi also criticized the Chief of Defence Staff for disclosing sensitive operational details on an international platform, which he deemed inappropriate.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain demanded a debate on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Review of electoral rolls in Bihar. He raised concerns about potential disenfranchisement and accused the ECI of initiating a politically motivated move that could impact the upcoming assembly elections.
The opposition has made it clear that they expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally respond to these issues. With national security, electoral integrity, and diplomatic credibility on the line, the pressure is mounting on the government to provide clarity during this session.
