Zero to Tech – Week 1: Getting Oriented & Networking Basics

1️⃣ Who am I, and why am I doing this?
I’m Himaja a 3rd-year B.Tech CSE student with a specialization in Cybersecurity. who want to get into the field of cyber security and learn new things.
The reason to start this series is to address how I get to learn new concepts and also how overthinking blindfolds us when we start something new, but this time we just don’t step back.
2️⃣ What was my focus this week?
I’ve learnt what cybersecurity means, understanding basic networking, and Wireshark.
3️⃣ What did I actually do?
Watched a video on cybersecurity basics
Learned networking terms (IP, DNS, etc.)
Installed and explored Wireshark
4️⃣ What did I learn?
I do have learnt about Network Basis and Computer Networking in last semester, so it went just like a revision.
And before hand i got to know how cyber security works and what should we learn about the cyber security to get into the ocean of knowledge to conquer a place in that area.
Wireshark, I installed it and I learnt about it using Chatgpt for explanations and my doubts.
5️⃣ What was hard or surprising?
Wireshark, GOD!!! it was a roller coaster ride of emotions and overwhelming, i thought of leaving the topic but somehow i learnt about it.
Honestly, I’m not saying it was a difficult topic, but the display of subnets and the procedure gave me some kind of overwhelming out of nothing. And if you are okay with the display and have already used any tool which looks something like Wireshark, then it will be easy for you.
6️⃣ How do I feel at the end of this week?
Well, even the hundredth step should be taken after completing the first step. And the first step will always makes to you think even for ten times for stopping the journey and pushes you into a self doubt web, but just try to clear the overthinking fog and step ahead.
This week made me feel just like it. But I’m proud of learning even minimal knowledge towards the Wireshark rather than leaving the topic. Also i’m so grateful for all the platforms that helped me to learn even after asking for 100th time to explain the same thing when i haven’t understand the concept.
7️⃣ What’s next?
I’ll do in Week 2 — Linux basics, Bandit, Kali.
