Tamil Nadu Govt Identifies Five Potential Sites for Rameswaram Airport Project

In a key move aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and economic development, the Tamil Nadu government has identified five potential sites in the Ramanathapuram district for establishing an airport near Rameswaram. This strategic decision marks progress on the promise made by State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu during the 2025 Budget session, where he committed to building an airport in the region to support tourism and uplift the southern belt of Tamil Nadu.
The new airport project, once finalised, is expected to significantly improve accessibility to the pilgrimage town of Rameswaram and nearby coastal areas, known for both religious and ecological significance. Officials said the site selection process is currently underway, with environmental, logistical, and feasibility assessments being carried out for the shortlisted locations.
Ramanathapuram is part of a region that has long remained underdeveloped in terms of air connectivity. The move to establish an airport is seen as part of the state’s broader infrastructure push to attract investment and facilitate tourism, particularly in districts with untapped potential. Local stakeholders and business leaders have welcomed the step, saying it could transform the region's socio-economic profile.
The government is expected to soon finalise one among the five identified sites after completing technical evaluations, with further announcements anticipated in the coming months.
