Building My Path in Tech After Outreachy

As my Outreachy internship draws closer to the end, I’ve found myself reflecting deeply on where I want my journey in tech to take me. I’m currently looking for remote job or internship opportunities in software engineering. I’m also curious about data engineering fields and trying to navigate into the space, it will be a path i would be trying also after my internship.
What I’m Looking For
I’m actively seeking remote, full-time or part-time paid positions that will allow me to continue building on my current skills and contribute meaningfully to a team. I’m also open to contract-based work, especially with startups, nonprofits, or mission-driven teams. I’ll be available to start immediately after my Outreachy internship ends in early September 2025.
While I’m currently based in Nigeria, I’m open to relocation for the right opportunity, particularly to countries in Europe, North America, or anywhere with a supportive tech ecosystem.
My Interests and the Work I Want to Contribute To
I'm passionate about contributing to frontend and backend projects that are meaningful, inclusive, and built to scale. As a full-stack developer, I enjoy building tools that not only function well but also feel accessible and bring positive impacts to users.
I’m especially interested in:
Developing responsive and accessible frontends using modern frameworks like React and Next.js
Building robust backend systems with Node.js and Express that handle real-world use cases
Creating and consuming RESTful APIs
Collaborating on open-source or mission-driven projects that make a positive impact.
Skills I Bring
Thanks to my outreachy internship with Wikimedia Foundation and my previous experience as a full-stack developer, i worked on real-world production projects and contributed meaningfully to an open-source MediaWiki extension. which makes me comfortable jumping into existing codebases and learning as I go I’ve built solid skills in:
JavaScript and SQL
Working with tools like Git, GitHub, and JSON Schema
Understanding backend workflows and database management
Communicating clearly which is an important skill if working remotely
My next goals aside looking for jobs include:
As learning never stops in tech, alongside looking for jobs i will be diving into Data engineering,
Deepening my understanding of data engineering tools like Apache Airflow, Spark, and Kafka
Gaining more hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP)
Learning more about data pipelines, data warehouses, and ELT/ETL strategies
My Background, My Perspective
Being Black and from Nigeria can be challenging in looking for remote jobs, I bring a unique value to the team and project apart from my technical skills, but in terms ofhow I think about solving problems.
I’ve learned to build with constraints, to collaborate across time zones and cultures, and to adapt quickly these skills have helped me thrive as a remote intern at Wikimedia Foundation.
I also speak English fluently, and have strong communication skills built from collaborative work, writing blog posts, documenting code, and contributing to community-based project.
Final Thoughts
My Internship at Outreachy with Wikimedia has helped me gain hands-on experience, grow technically, and most importantly believe in the value I can bring to any team. As I take the next steps, I’m looking forward to joining communities and teams where I can continue learning, contributing, and making an impact.
If you’re building something great and need someone who’s passionate, adaptive, and technically growing I’d love to be part of it.
