😳 I Just Learned About Akira Ransomware — And It’s Seriously Scary!

Hey everyone 👋

While reading a news article recently, I came across a shocking story — a 158-year-old transport company in the UK lost all access to their systems because hackers got in using just a weak password.

Can you believe that? A password was all it took.

What’s worse? The group behind the attack was something called the Akira ransomware gang — a name I had never even heard before.

So I started digging into it — and wow, there’s a lot that beginners like me should know about this. Here's what I found.

What is Akira Ransomware?

Akira is a type of malware (bad software) used by hackers to attack companies. Once they get into a company’s network, they do two scary things:

  1. They lock (encrypt) all the files so the company can’t access them anymore.

  2. They steal the data and threaten to leak it unless a ransom is paid, usually in cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.

Basically, it's like holding someone's digital life hostage.

The UK Transport Company Hack

This is how I found out about Akira. A well-known UK-based transport company that’s been around for 158 years got hacked by the Akira group (believed to be linked to Russian hackers).

How did it happen?

They got in using a weak password that had no extra security like 2-factor authentication. Within minutes, the attackers took control, locked everything down, and demanded ransom.

The company couldn’t access emails, internal systems, or even customer data. It completely stopped their operations.

That really opened my eyes. If it can happen to such an old and established company — it can happen to anyone.

Why Akira is Dangerous

It attacks both Windows and Linux systems. It has hit dozens of companies across industries — transport, healthcare, education, tech, and more. They often ask for millions in ransom.

It’s linked to a bigger ransomware gang that used to operate under the name Conti — known for massive global attacks.

What Can We Do to Stay Safe?

Even though we may not run big companies, there are simple things we can all do to protect ourselves and our data:

For everyone: 1. Use strong passwords 2. Always turn on 2-factor authentication (like OTPs or authenticator apps). 3. Never click on links or open files from unknown emails. 4. Keep your software and apps updated

For businesses: 1. Don’t leave old accounts active. 2. Use security tools to monitor networks. 3. Take regular backups of important data. 4. Train employees to spot scams

What I Learned

I always thought cyberattacks only happened to tech companies. But this story about a transport company really made it clear — no one is safe if you don’t take security seriously.

Even something as simple as a weak password can open the door to massive damage.

If you’re beginner in cybersecurity like me, learning about threats like Akira is a good first step. It’s scary, but also fascinating — and it made me want to learn more.

Heard of Akira Before?

If this is new to you too, let’s keep exploring and learning together. And if you already know about this stuff, I’d love your thoughts — what else should beginners like me look into next? Let me know! 😊
