WI vs AUS: Andre Russell given ‘Guard of Honour’ in the final T20 match, watch video

Allrounder Andre Russell is retiring as one of the best T20 International cricketers to represent the West Indies.

Andre Russell was given a guard of honour by his West Indies teammates and the visiting Australian team in the last T20 match of his international career. Russell has retired from T20 internationals and has already announced that Tuesday’s match will be his last.

Russell is a great T20 all-rounder who bowls right-arm fast and is known for his tremendous batting. He has been a T20 World Cup winner twice. The 37-year-old Jamaican player was also presented with a memento.

In his farewell T20 innings, Russell did what he does best – sweep the bowlers around the ground. He scored 36 runs off 15 balls, including two fours and four sixes, as West Indies posted 172/8 at Russell’s home ground Sabina Park. Russell fell prey to Nathan Ellis in the 17th over.

“I just want to say thank you once again. I am very grateful to end my career here. Played in front of my home crowd, family and friends. The result didn’t go in my favour, but in the end, I am happy and grateful. The enthusiasm of the audience in the last two games has been amazing. I really appreciate it. We tried our best. I think it’s time now to call it quits and wish the players all the best moving forward. I am very grateful to end my wonderful international career at Sabina Park. Keep supporting,” Russell said in the post-match interview.

Australia take a 2-0 lead in the series

Despite Russell’s blazing innings, West Indies scored 172/8, but the match ended in Australia’s victory. Josh Inglis (78* off 33 balls) and Cameron Green (56* off 33 balls) shared a record 131-run partnership to reach the target with eight wickets and almost five overs to spare and take a 2-0 lead in the series.
