How to Crochet the Star Stitch

Ready to make a starburst-like crochet pattern? Explore endless opportunities using the complex stitches, which produce a charming look that adds flair to your project. Star stitch, also known as Marguerite or daisy, creates a sequence of tiny clusters of stars that give any piece rich texture and visual appeal. Let's explore in our blog how you can use your crochet hook to create this stunning look in your project.
Star Stitch- A decorative Design
The star stitch is a decorative pattern that features a starburst design in your crocheted fabric. It follows a two-row repeat pattern, in which the first row is a base for the star, and the second row completes it. This is a little bit more complex than the basic stitch. As a result, you get a thick texture, which is great for projects such as blankets and dishcloths.
Materials Required
Let's find out what tools and materials you need to make this pattern:
As a beginner, choose DK or worsted-weight yarn, as it's easy to handle these yarn types. You get a perfect stitch and a beautiful visual look.
Make sure to use an appropriate hook size that matches the yarn. A wooden crochet hook in a size of 5.00 mm that goes perfectly with the worsted weight yarn.
Crochet Terms in the US
Chain: CH
Single Crochet: DC
Yarn - YO
Chain space- Ch-1 sp
In this, we will be using UK crochet terms, which are different from the US terminology. In UK terms, double crochet is referred to as single crochet (SC). Refer to our blog to learn US vs UK terminology.
Instructions to Crochet a Star Stitch
Get ready to enhance your skills by learning this amazing technique? Follow these simple guidelines below:
Step 1: Make a foundation Row
Make CH stitches of odd numbers plus 3 extra. For example: 15+3=18 CHs.
These extra CHs allow you to work the complete star.
Step 2: Start Making Stars
Make an SC by inserting a single-ended crochet hook into the 2nd stitch from the hook. YO and pull up a loop. (see two loops)
Repeat this step in the next 4 CHS to have a total of 6 loops on your hook.
YO and pull through all 6 loops.
CH 1 and close the star; this will form your first star stitch.
Step 3: Create a star pattern in subsequent stitches
Insert hook into the eye of the previous star (ch-1 sp), YO, and pull up a loop.
Then, insert the hook into the last post of the previous star, YO, and pull up a loop.
Now, insert into the base of the last stitch and pull up a loop.
Insert into the next 2 CHs, pulling up loops from each. You will again have 6 loops.
YO and pull through all 6 loops, then CH 1 to finish.
Repeat across the row.
Step 4: Finish the Row
- In the end, make a 1 SC in the last stitch.
Points to Remember when Crocheting a Star Stitch
A few simple suggestions make your star stitch beautiful:
It is essential to keep the loops loose enough to pull through all 6 loops.
Always start with an odd number of CHs plus 3.
Use stitch markers to mark the beginning of the star stitch.
Double-count the loops on the hook to avoid an incorrect loop count.
To add texture or combine different techniques, you can experiment with Tunisian crochet hooks.
