Ravi Shastri’s Concern: Pant’s Injury Could Be Serious
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed deep concern after Rishabh Pant was taken to the hospital for scans following a painful injury on Day 1 of the Manchester Test against England. The left-handed batter inside-edged a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes onto his foot during the final session. He immediately grimaced in pain, prompting the physio to rush in. Despite on-field treatment, Pant was unable to put any weight on his foot and had to be taken off the field in a golf cart-like vehicle.
Pant received initial treatment at the ground’s medical facility, but just minutes before stumps, he was rushed to the hospital for further scans. The results are still awaited, but it appears unlikely that the wicketkeeper-batter will take any further part in the must-win match for India. Even India captain Shubman Gill visited the medical facility to check on him.
Ravi Shastri believes the injury could worsen overnight, regardless of the icing applied to the affected area. Speaking on Sky Sports, the former India coach painted a grim picture as fans across the country hope for Pant’s speedy recovery.
“Just seeing his face, grimacing there… He has a very high pain threshold, and for him to be grimacing like that means it’s serious. It can only get worse overnight,” said Shastri. “When you get up in the morning, it can be really sore, no matter the amount of ice you put. He’ll be icing it through the night. Let’s hope it’s not a break or a crack,” he added.
India’s effort after being asked to bat
At stumps on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, India posted a solid 264/4 with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur unbeaten at the crease, both on 19. Sai Sudharsan emerged as the top scorer for the visitors with a gritty 61 off 151 deliveries in testing conditions.
However, the left-hander’s dismissal came against the run of play, falling to a well-executed short-ball tactic by England captain Ben Stokes. Earlier in the innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul chipped in with valuable contributions of 58 and 46 runs, respectively.
Rishabh Pant looked in ominous touch and was batting confidently on 37 before a foot injury abruptly ended his innings. His partnership with Sai Sudharsan was beginning to shift momentum firmly in India’s favour, but the injury opened the door for England. Seizing the opportunity, Stokes quickly removed Sudharsan, halting India’s charge.
A total of 83 overs were bowled on the day before bad light forced the umpires to call stumps early.
