Where to Stay in Bali for Easy Access to Diving

Bali is a diver’s paradise, offering a wide range of underwater experiences—from colorful coral gardens to thrilling drift dives and world-famous wrecks. But with so many regions to explore, choosing where to stay can make a big difference in how easy (and enjoyable) your dive holiday will be. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, here’s a guide to the best areas to stay in Bali for effortless access to the island’s top dive sites.
If you’re looking for comfort, convenience, and central access to multiple dive regions, staying in Sanur is one of the smartest choices. Located just 30 minutes from the airport, Sanur offers quick transfer options to Padang Bai, Nusa Penida, and Tulamben. It’s also the home base of many professional dive centers, including Bali Aqua, which organizes daily dive trips across the island. You’ll have access to modern amenities, beachfront cafés, and relaxed accommodations without being far from the action.
For wreck lovers and macro photography enthusiasts, Tulamben is an excellent base. Just steps from the legendary USAT Liberty Wreck, this quiet northeast village allows for easy shore entries and sunrise dives. Many divers choose to join dive safaris from Sanur to explore Tulamben without having to move accommodations—but staying on-site lets you dive the wreck as often as you like.
Amed, just south of Tulamben, offers similar access to macro-rich reefs and relaxed village life, with slightly more variety in accommodation and cafés. It’s ideal for those seeking a laid-back vibe and multiple shore diving sites within walking distance.
If you're eager to swim with manta rays or spot the elusive mola mola, then a day trip to Nusa Penida is a must. While you can stay on the island itself, most divers prefer to depart from Sanur early in the morning and return in the afternoon—avoiding the tourist crowds while maximizing dive time. Nusa Penida dive trips are easily arranged through trusted operators based in Sanur.
For those planning a multi-day itinerary across different dive regions, consider booking a custom dive safari in Bali. This allows you to stay in several locations—like Tulamben, Amed, and Candidasa—while your dive center handles logistics, transfers, and equipment. It’s the best way to experience Bali’s underwater diversity without the hassle of planning everything yourself.
