CBSE, CISCE Push Fitness in Schools, But Parents Seek Stronger Action

The CBSE and CISCE boards have introduced new health-focused initiatives to foster a culture of fitness and nutrition among school students. With programs like the Sugar Board, Oil Board, and Active CISCE, these efforts aim to transform school campuses into healthier environments. However, parents and educators argue that merely displaying fitness boards is not enough.

The objective of these campaigns is to promote awareness around food choices, physical activity, and overall well-being. Schools are encouraged to put up visual boards that track the usage of sugar and oil in food preparation, alongside posters and schedules encouraging physical movement and exercise breaks.

Officials from both boards maintain that these fitness-oriented steps are in line with the National Education Policy's emphasis on holistic development. Active CISCE, for instance, includes structured physical education programs and nutrition awareness for both students and staff.

Despite these efforts, many parents believe the implementation needs to go beyond symbolic gestures. “While boards are good for awareness, actual changes in canteen food, compulsory fitness routines, and periodic health checks are necessary,” said a parent of a Class 8 student in Delhi.

Teachers also echo similar concerns, stating that schools need structured policies, dedicated resources, and regular monitoring to ensure these initiatives create measurable impact.

Some institutions have begun integrating yoga, sports hours, and healthy meal plans as part of daily routines, but the pace remains inconsistent across regions.

As India’s school systems continue to evolve, parents and experts alike are calling for deeper, actionable engagement rather than surface-level compliance.
