Rishabh Pant Suffers Toe Fracture After Being Hit by Chris Woakes’ Delivery. India were dealt an early blow in the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, as wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant suffered a toe fracture on Day 1. Attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, Rishabh Pant was struck hard on his right toe and had to be taken off the field on a cart, visibly in significant pain.

ICC Scans later confirmed a fracture, casting serious doubt over his participation in both innings. Initially, he didn’t return to the ground on Day 2, effectively ruling him out of batting again. However, displaying immense determination, Rishabh Pant not only returned to the field but also resumed batting. He was looking well-set at 37 before the injury occurred.

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan expressed his surprise at the incident, noting how unexpected and unfortunate the injury was during such a crucial match.

ICC Michael Vaughan Calls for Injury Substitutes in Tests After Rishabh Pant Setback

ICC

Following reports that Rishabh Pant is unlikely to bat due to injury, former England captain Michael Vaughan has questioned current Test cricket regulations. ICC, Michael Vaughan argued that players suffering clear and obvious injuries in the first innings should be allowed like-for-like substitutes—similar to the existing concussion substitute rule.

Taking to Twitter, Vaughan wrote:

Clear and obvious injuries in the first innings of Tests we should allow like for like Subs .. we have concussion subs so surely we can have subs for injuries like Rishabhs .. https://t.co/MComKbHbyn

“ICC Michael Vaughan: Clear and obvious injuries in the first innings of Tests — we should allow like-for-like subs. We have concussion subs, so surely we can have subs for injuries like Rishabh’s.”

Although the ICC has approved the use of like-for-like substitutes for injuries, this provision has yet to be implemented in international matches and has so far only been seen in domestic cricket.

ICC: Meanwhile, medical reports suggest that Rishabh Pant will be sidelined for approximately six weeks. The BCCI is expected to announce his replacement soon for the upcoming fifth Test at The Oval.
