Rishabh Pant is expected to miss the fifth and final Test against England, set to begin on July 31 at The Oval, due to a toe injury sustained during the first innings of the fourth Test. The wicketkeeper-batter was struck on the right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has already finalized Rishabh Pant’ replacement, naming Tamil Nadu’s N Jagadeesan as the stand-in wicketkeeper for the match. The selectors were reportedly considering Ishan Kishan, but he too is dealing with an injury and was deemed unavailable.
Rishabh Pant’, who is also the team’s vice-captain, will now likely sit out the series decider as India look to adjust their playing XI for the crucial clash.
Rishabh Pant’: N Jagadeesan Set to Join Indian Squad Ahead of Fifth Test
Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter N Jagadeesan is all set to join the Indian team ahead of the fifth and final Test against England. The decision comes on the back of his stellar domestic performances in recent years.
In the previous edition of the Ranji Trophy, Jagadeesan amassed 674 runs in eight matches at an average of 56.16, which included two centuries and five half-centuries. He finished as Tamil Nadu’s top scorer in the tournament. In his overall First-Class career, the right-hander has accumulated 3,373 runs at an average of 47.50, with 10 centuries and 14 fifties in 52 matches.
Meanwhile, in the ongoing fourth Test, Rishabh Pant displayed tremendous grit by coming out to bat despite a painful injury. He managed to score a vital 41 after the fall of Shardul Thakur’s wicket.
However, Rishabh Pant’ absence in the final Test will be a significant setback for India. He has been in excellent form throughout the series, scoring over 470 runs, including two centuries and three fifties, making him the second-highest run-getter.
Jagadeesan is expected to be a backup option, with Dhruv Jurel likely to continue as the first-choice wicketkeeper in the series decider.
