Records Tumble in Old Trafford Thriller: Stokes, Bumrah, and Rahul Make Headlines

England are fighting to secure the fourth Test series at Old Trafford. On the other hand, India are playing to stay in the series. Although Ben Stokes’ team is ahead in this fight at the end of the fourth day. The English captain himself is leading the team from the front. He has written his name in the ranks of legends by scoring a century and taking 5 wickets in the same innings. On the other hand, the Indian bowlers have had a terrible day. Jasprit Bumrah has had the first such bittersweet day in his career.
After India were bowled out for 358 in the first innings, England’s innings was stopped at 669. As a result, they took a lead of 311 runs in the first innings. Then, despite losing 2 wickets for naught in the second innings, Shubman Gill’s team managed to score 172 runs and safely ended the rest of the day. Although India is still behind by 137 runs. Lokesh Rahul is 87 and Gill is unbeaten on 78 runs. Several records were made on the fourth day of the Old Trafford Test. They are mentioned at a glance in this report –
669
England scored their second highest 669 runs in a Test innings against India. Previously, they had scored a highest of 710 runs in 2011 (Alastair Cook scored 294 runs). However, Old Trafford got the highest team innings in Tests. Previously, Australia had scored a highest of 656 runs at this venue (in 1964).
100
This is the first time in his 91-inning Test career that Jasprit Bumrah has conceded 100 runs in an innings. Although he took 2 wickets for 112 runs in 33 overs. The Indian star had previously conceded a maximum of 99 runs in an innings. In December last year, he took 4 wickets in 28.4 overs. Apart from this, Bumrah has bowled 30 overs in a Test innings for only the second time, in 2021 in the Chennai Test against England (in an innings).
In the first innings of the Manchester Test, all four Indian bowlers conceded more than 100 runs. This is the 25th incident for India in Tests, but the first in the last decade. The Indian bowlers had the same experience in three consecutive Tests in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney during the last 2014-15 season on the tour of Australia.
51
However, Bumrah has also had a sweet moment in an embarrassing day. He took the most wickets (so far) by an Indian bowler on English soil, 51. Ishant Sharma also took the same number of wickets. Bumrah has a chance to surpass him. Apart from that, he also has the most wickets (64) in Tests in Australia. Which is also the highest by an Indian bowler against a specific opponent outside the country.
7000/200
Ben Stokes has become only the third cricketer in Test history to score at least 7000 runs and take 200 wickets. The first two on this list are legends – West Indies’ Sir Garry Sobers (8032 runs and 235 wickets) and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis (13289 runs and 292 wickets). Stokes currently has 7023 runs and 229 wickets in Tests.
100/5
Stokes took the fifth wicket of his Test career in the first innings against India, later scoring 141 runs with the bat. This is the second time he has achieved the feat of wicket and century in the same Test. The only other England captains to do so are Ian Botham, Tony Greig once and Gus Atkinson once.
Stokes is only the fifth captain to score a century and take 5 wickets in the same Test. However, this feat was seen for the first time after Pakistan captain Imran Khan (opponent India) in 1983. Apart from this, Dennis Atkinson (West Indies, opponent Australia), Gary Sobers (West Indies, opponent England), Mushtaq Ahmed (Pakistan, opponent West Indies) have the same record as captain.
500+
Shubman Gill (697) and KL Rahul (508) have both scored 500+ runs in the ongoing England tour. This is the second instance of two Indian batsmen scoring 500+ runs in an away series. Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar (774) and Dilip Sardesai (642) achieved the same feat against the West Indies in the 1970-71 season.
Rahul is only the second Indian opener to score 500+ runs in a Test series abroad. Gavaskar had previously achieved the same record twice (774 against the West Indies and 542 against England).
Apart from this, Rahul is only the second Asian cricketer to score 500+ runs in England. The other is Gavaskar. Apart from this, Rahul is also the second foreign opener to achieve the same feat in the 21st century. Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith scored 714 runs on English soil in 2003.
