T20 cricket is well known for high scoring action, huge boundaries, and excitement for fans. To see batters belting balls to the boundary, breaking records to reach 50s, 100s, and a scores of 200+, is always thrilling.

Teams can even go completely bonkers and score over 300 runs in a single match. However, batting teams do not always score big runs in T20.

There are occasions when a batting side has a bad day and the entire batting order can be bundled out for nothing. These matches show the unpredictability of cricket when a team can have a particularly poor day with the bat.

In this article, therefore, we look at the other side of T20 cricket. In particular, we look at the all-time lowest team totals in T20 matches.

Examining the lowest scores records highlights that a strong bowling attack and some conditions can severely test even the best batters.

In particular, we look at the all time lowest scores and which teams had the worst day on the cricket field.

The All-Time Lowest Score T20

The record for the all time lowest T20 score is recorded by the Ivory Coast. In November 2024, they took on Nigeria in a Qualifier Cup match for the Men's T20 World Cup.

In that game, Ivory Coast were bowled out for only 7 runs. It was a remarkable collapse as their innings lasted just 7.3 overs. Nigeria batters scored a huge 271 runs in their innings to win the match by a remarkable 264 runs. No batter from the Ivory Coast team scored more than 4 runs. This match broke the T20 record for the smallest team total.

Prior to this, other teams owned this unwanted record. The Isle of Man (2023) had been bowled out for 10 runs against Spain, and Mongolia scored only 10 runs against Singapore (2024). These totals highlight the struggles emerging cricket nations have at T20 cricket.

Lowest score in T20 by Test playing nations

While the newer teams are unsurprisingly the majority of the lowest scores, no team is immune from a batting collapse like this. Even the best teams, the Test playing teams, can put in a performance that many would like to forget. It just shows that on any given day any team can lose.

A review of the bottom line in t20 for these high profile teams reinforces the point.

The West Indies lays claim to the record of the lowest innings by a major team in T20. Known for the incredible strength of their batters, they were bowled out for a mere 45 runs by England in 2019. The West Indies also pops up again relatively near the top of this list, with them scoring 55 runs, also to England, in 2021.

Additional major teams have also recorded low scores:

  • New Zealand has been dismissed for 60 runs on two occasions, once to Sri Lanka in 2014, and again to Bangladesh in 2021.

  • Australia's lowest total is 62 runs which came at the hands of Bangladesh in 2021.

  • The Indian cricket team's lowest score is 74 all out, which they registered against Australia in 2008.

These are again demonstrative that even the most seasoned teams can collapse. A tough pitch, a superb bowling performance, or even just a bad day can lead to a rapid collapse. Fans that closely follow the sport with organizations such as Kheloexch360 know that this opportunity for upsets is just part of the thrill of watching T20 cricket. The fact that any team can record a bottom line is part of the charm of T20 cricket.
