Empathy: The Oldest (and Most Future-Proof) Tool in the Engineer’s Toolbox

We’re standing at the edge of a technological shift that’s reshaping how we build, think, and live. AI is no longer “coming” — it’s here. It’s generating good quality content, making better decisions and writing production-quality code.
But in the face of all this powerful automation, one timeless skill is becoming more critical than ever: empathy.
Yes — empathy. The ability to deeply understand people, their needs, frustrations, goals, and emotions.
In fact, I’d argue that empathy is not just a soft skill anymore — it’s becoming a strategic advantage.
🤖 Empathy Isn’t Replaced by AI — It’s Amplified by It
Here’s what’s changing: AI gives us access to massive amounts of behavioural data — what people search for, how they interact with products, where they struggle. But data without empathy is just noise.
You still need someone who can ask:
What does this mean for the person behind the click?
Why is this friction point frustrating?
How does this feature make someone feel at 11PM after a hard day?
Empathy helps us interpret data through a human lens. It bridges the gap between what people do and what they need. In this way, empathy isn’t getting left behind in the AI era — it’s becoming the filter we use to make AI useful, ethical, and impactful.
And here’s something I believe deeply: we don’t need to compete with AI — we need to collaborate with it.
The same way a smart student doesn’t waste time feeling intimidated by the top student in class — they befriend them, learn from them, grow with them. That’s the mindset we need with AI. Befriend the smart “kid in class.” Learn how to work with it, not against it. Let it help us move faster, think deeper, and reach people more effectively — but never at the cost of our humanity.
💡A Shift in Perspective: The Real Purpose of Innovation
The more I delve into the world of AI and its endless and exciting potential, the more I’m driven by a simple but powerful realisation:
Good innovation doesn’t start with tools — it starts with problems. Human problems.
As a senior software engineer, my core responsibility is to solve problems — to simplify, improve, or transform how people interact with the world through technology. AI is offering us a once-in-a-generation leap in capability, but without empathy, we’ll miss the mark.
We won’t build what matters.
One of the most impactful books I’ve ever read in my professional life is The Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene. It opened my eyes to how deeply human behaviour shapes everything — especially in business and tech. That understanding is what sharpens our intuition, helps us ask better questions, and spot the real gaps worth solving.
Understanding real human pain points — not just user behaviour in a dashboard, but lived, contextual struggles — is where the true opportunities for innovation lie. It’s how we ensure that the benefits of AI aren’t just efficient, but meaningful.
So now more than ever, empathy isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s a competitive edge. It helps you ask better questions. See what others miss. Build things that don’t just function but actually serve.
🌍 Why It Matters More Now
As someone who has lived, worked, and built in both Africa and Europe, I’ve seen firsthand how the tech landscape can either include or exclude people—not just based on access, but based on how thoughtfully systems are designed.
With AI, we now have more tools than ever to analyse and adapt. But that power also comes with responsibility. If we aren’t empathetic, we’ll build solutions that scale misunderstanding, not progress.
Empathy pushes us to think beyond just functionality—to think about life, legacy, and the unseen edge cases that matter deeply to real people.
Have you ever thought about how your future grandchildren might retrieve your family photos stored securely in the cloud?
What happens to a mother’s thriving crypto wallet when she passes—how does she securely share the passphrase with her children, without exposing it prematurely?
What about all the money currently held in meme coins, NFTs, or gaming assets—how do these get inherited, protected, or transferred when someone is no longer here?
There are entire categories of innovation that haven’t fully accounted for human mortality, for intergenerational continuity, and for the emotional weight of what we leave behind. These are the kinds of blind spots that only empathy can reveal—and only emotionally intelligent engineers can build for.
So, in this AI-powered world:
Engineers who understand human behaviour will design better systems.
Leaders who prioritise emotional intelligence will make better strategic decisions.
Teams who listen first will build products that actually work for real people.
Empathy is no longer just the thing that makes you “nice to work with.” It’s what will make you better at your job. Faster. Smarter. More aligned with reality.

We are entering an era where AI can handle more tasks, which means we need to focus more on understanding. The builders who succeed won’t just be those who generate the best outputs, but those who ask the best questions and genuinely care about the people on the other side of the interface.
