🌧️ Live Update: Floods Ravage Prayagraj — Ganga & Yamuna Breach Danger Marks

Prayagraj, Aug 4, 2025 — The twin rivers Ganga and Yamuna have surged well above their danger levels, unleashing widespread flooding across the district and bringing daily life to a standstill in many areas.
🚩 Current Situation (as of today)
Over 10,000 houses submerged across 62 localities, with more than 6,000 people (from ~1,300 families) relocated to 17 relief camps.
The rivers remain in spate, flowing 1 meter above danger thresholds: the Ganga reached ~84.96 m at Phaphamau, and Yamuna ~85.06 m at Naini.
🌆 Urban Impact
- In the city, areas such as Karela Bagh, Rajapur, Salori, Govindpur, Shivkuti, Kareli, Daraganj, Sadar, Phaphamau, and Koraon have witnessed severe waterlogging, disrupting road access. One resident was seen rowing a boat to work through knee-deep floodwater in Karela Bagh.
🛟 Relief & Evacuation Efforts
14 relief camps are fully operational, with 97 others identified across multiple tehsils. Nearly 4,000 displaced residents are in shelters.
Some areas report shortages of basic amenities in shelters, despite efforts to distribute food packets (5,000+), medical aid, boats (128 rowboats, 1 motorboat), and support for livestock.
🧑⚕️ Government Action
- The UP Chief Minister’s ‘Team-11’ has mobilized, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring and coordination with SDRF, NDRF, PAC, and local authorities. The focus is on safe evacuations, timely aid, and containment of misinformation.
🙏 A Tale of Resilience
- A viral video from Daraganj shows a local Sub-Inspector Chandradeep Nishad performing a unique ritual: offering milk and flowers to the floodwaters entering his home, treating the inundation as a divine blessing from “Mother Ganga.” He later swims in the water before heading to duty.
💧 Preventive Measures
- Authorities are installing flood zone demarcation pillars in risk-prone riverbank areas like Meja, Salori, Phaphamau, and Phulpur to restrict unregulated construction and raise community awareness. Implementation is underway within the next few weeks.
